A Nevada Assembly member is bringing forward a bill allowing for the state to appoint members of local school boards.

Republican Assemblyman Pat Hickey is sponsoring AB339 which was heard Wednesday in the Assembly Education Committee.

The bill would set a process allowing the State Board of Education to either appoint two people to the school board or replace two members. The proposal would allow boards to hold a public meeting reviewing membership at any time or be forced to hold one if 10 percent of voters sign a petition demanding it.

Hickey said the bill would give voters more engagement with school board members and allow the state to have a stronger voice in local school issues.
