Local sports roundup: Douglas loses a heartbreaker to the Cougars

MINDEN — Dion Mortimer pitched four-hit ball over 6.1 innings, however, the Douglas Tigers fell just short with their seventh inning rally Thursday afternoon in a 4-2 Northern Division I loss at home against Spanish Springs.

Douglas (0-8 conference, 2-11 overall) scored twice in the bottom of the seventh and had the bases loaded when reliever Ricky Espinoza rang up a strikeout to close out the win for Spanish Springs (6-2, 7-3).

Mortimer allowed three runs in the opening two innings, but settled down and kept Douglas in the game. The junior right-hander allowed four runs on four hits, two walks and six hit batsmen (three in the first inning). Mortimer’s outing was the longest by a Douglas starter this season.

The Tigers dropped a 10-0 decision at Spanish Springs in the opener of the two-game series on Tuesday.

Spencer Trivitt doubled down the left field line to lead off the Tigers’ seventh inning rally. Haden Keller dropped a one-out single into short left field to put runners at the corners and Kaleb Foster was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Cale Kynett walked to drive one run home and pinch runner Trevor Tierney scored on an error to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Carson girls lose

McQueen overcame a 3-1 deficit, scoring seven runs over a three-inning stretch to knock off Carson, 12-6, Thursday at Carson.

The loss dropped Carson to 1-6 in league play heading into Saturday’s home doubleheader against North Valleys at 11 a.m.

Carson made seven errors in the game behind lefty Lauren Lemburg, who went the distance.

Camiell Simpson’s two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh was the highlight for Carson. Simpson also had a single.

Bailey Allen, Gaby Winder, Elise Brady and Sarah Runge also hit safely

Douglas hammers Wooster

RENO — The Douglas Tigers banged out 10 hits, six of which went for extra bases, on their way to a 12-2 Northern Division I victory on Thursday afternoon against Wooster.

Mackenzie Brixey and Kylie Swan hit singles and both scored when Allison Meyer tripled in the first inning. Kali Sargent followed with a sacrifice fly to right field that brought Meyer home to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead.

Kaitlyn Bowman pitched a complete game to earn credit for the win. The left-hander allowed two runs on seven hits.
