Local sports roundup: Dust Devils sweep Lowry to win the series

DAYTON — Dayton High used some late-inning heroics to sweep Saturday’s Northern Division 1A doubleheader from Lowry.

In the opener, Dayton scored three times in the fifth en route to a 9-6 win. In the nightcap, the Dust Devils scored four in the sixth on the way to a 13-9 victory.

“I was pleased that our club put yesterday behind them and came out today and got both games,” Dayton coach Mike Burrows said. “I was glad to see the kids come out focused.”

Tied 1-1 in the opener, Jesse Schmidt, D.J. Baker and Jacob Nelson drove in runs to give Dayton a 5-4 lead after four. In the fifth, Austin Rodgers, Nelson and Trevor Burrows drove in runs to make it 8-4. Jared Reed closed it out with a run-scoring hit in the sixth.

Leading 6-4 after three in the nightcap, Schmidt and Gage Duke had run-scoring hits to make it 9-4. After Lowry closed to 9-8, Schmidt, Mason Haines and Trevor Burrows drove in runs as the Dust Devils grabbed a 13-9 lead.

Schmidt went 6-for-8 with four RBI, while Reed and Burrows had four hits each with Burrows driving in three.

“Hopefully we go into Tuesday’s game at South Tahoe with a little momentum,” Burrows said. “They have a solid club and we’re going to need our best to get a road win.”

SWIMMING

Carson boys win thrice

The Carson High boys team swam past Bishop Manogue (152-109), Galena (148-135) and North Valleys (193-16) Friday at the Carson Aquatic Center.

The girls weren’t so fortunate, beating North Valleys (225-43) and losing to Manogue (157-146) and Galena (151-143).

Individually and overall among the four teams, Tallon Rauch won the 100 back (57.63) and was second in the 100 fly (56.78). Bryan Remick was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.47) and third in the 200 free (2:06.97). Dagen Kipling won the 200 IM (2:01.32) and was second in the 500 free (5:05.10). Reece Canfield was third in the 100 fly at 1:01.86. Jesse Session was fourth in the 100 fly (1:05.67), Brett Kolb was fourth in the 500 free (5:25.09) and Trevor Sollberger was fourth in the 100 free (59.81). Carson won the 200 medley relay and 400 relay and was second in the 200 free relay.

On the girls side, Nicole Van Geel took seconds in the 100 free (58.06) and the 100 back (1:05.38). Blanca Sosa was third in the 200 free (2:07.49) and 500 free (5:42.92). Christy Krahn was fourth in the 200 IM (2:34.75) and fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.29). CHS placed second in the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay, and was third in the 200 free relay.

SOFTBALL

Reed sweeps Tigers

MINDEN — Reed scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally for a 4-3 win Saturday in game one of its Northern Division I doubleheader against Douglas.

Julia Jensen pitched a shutout as Reed (9-0 conference, 14-0 overall) won the second game, 9-0, to complete the sweep of the Tigers (4-3, 9-5).

In game one, the Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning when Kali Sargent lined a leadoff home run over the left field fence and, two batters later, Makayla Shaver hit a towering shot over the 206-foot sign in center field.

As it turned out, the cushion wasn’t enough as Reed scored an unearned run in the sixth and added three more in the seventh. All four of the runs came after two outs.

Jensen pitched a complete game 6-hitter to pick up the win. The sophomore right-hander rang up 15 strikeouts and walked none.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Pack rips Spartans

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The 26th-ranked Nevada baseball team exploded for 21 hits in a 22-1 blowout victory over San José State, Saturday at Municipal Stadium.

The margin of victory was the biggest since 2010. The teams conclude the series today.

Senior Austin Byler and junior Ryan Howell hit back-to-back home runs while senior Kyle Hunt hit a grand slam. Twelve student-athletes recorded a hit for Nevada while freshman Cal Stevenson, junior Bryce Greager and sophomore Trenton Brooks each tallied three-hit games. Junior LHP Christian Stolo (3-1) earned the win on the mound.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Pack falls short, 11-9

RENO — Nevada softball pushed two runs across in the bottom of the seventh but could not get past Utah State as the Aggies topped the Wolf Pack, 11-9, in the second game of a three-game set at Hixson Park on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Karley Hopkins went 2-for-5 with an RBI double, freshman Alyssa Mendez went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and junior Megan Sweet tallied two RBI for the Pack (10-21, 0-2 MW). Freshman Chase Redington took the loss and senior Megan Dortch tossed 4.0 innings with four strikeouts.

The final game of the Pack’s conference-opening series against Utah State will be today at noon.

JC SOFTBALL

WNC swept, falls to 4th place

HENDERSON — Western Nevada College dropped a doubleheader to archrival College of Southern Nevada, 6-4 and 5-4, to drop into fourth place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.

In the opener, CSN scored all six of its runs in the first four innings off Kristina George.

WNC fought back with runs in the fourth and fifth and two in the top of the seventh. Gabi Canibeyaz doubled home two in the last inning. She had three hits in the game.

Western led 3-0 after two in the nightcap, but Southern tied it with three in the third.

Amber Raab gave CSN a 4-3 lead with a solo homer, and WNC evened the game in the sixth with an unearned run. Rebeka Gross won it for CSN with a solo homer in the bottom of the inning.

Lauren Lesniak and Melanie Meacham had two hits each for WNC.

HIGH SCHOOL TRACK

Dayton boys 3rd at Fallon

FALLON — Dayton High boys fiished third behind Division I track powers McQueen and Reed at Saturday’s 43rd annual Fallon Elks Invitational.

McQueen finished with 145, Reno 100 and Dayton had 95.

Zach Hawley won the shot (56-8 1/2) and the discus (162-2). Benji Ply won the 110 hurdles in 15.36 and was third in the pole vault at 14-feet. Dallon Mendoza was second in the 400 at 51.83. Jon Ply was third in the hurdles (15.87). Jesus Castaneda was third in the shot (48-3) and discus (131-7). The group of Mendoza, Tobias Tapley, Wesley Wright and Skyler Berntson was third in the 800 relay (1:33.27), while Benji Ply, Berntson, Tapley and Mendoza were second in the 1600 relay (3:32.60).

Kaylee Turner won the discus (127-7) and placed second in the shot (36-1 1/4), as the DHS girls were eighth with 33 points. Jessie Ingham,

Sydney Strickler, Rebecca Mason and Ashley Mason were fourth in the 800 relay (1:52.40), and Strickler teamed with Magaly Gonzalez, Rachel Hadley and Zaria Landis for fourth in the 3200 relay.
