Education achievements: Douglas grad interning on television show

John Bommelman, a native of Carson City and 2010 graduate of Douglas High School, is in his first semester as an intern for Studio One, an award-winning television show produced at the University of North Dakota.

Bommelman, a member of the weather team, works as a camera operator on show day and produces content for the weather portion of the show.

Bommelman will graduate from the University of North Dakota in May 2017 with a degree in atmospheric science. Upon graduation, he plans on finding a full-time position as a meteorologist.

Studio One airs live on UND Channel 3 at 5 p.m. Thursdays. Re- broadcasts can be seen at 7 a.m., noon, 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. daily and on Saturdays at 10 a.m. Prairie Public Television airs Studio One at 6 a.m. on Saturdays. WNC Phi Theta Kappa inducts new members

More than 80 Western Nevada College students were inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa national honor society during ceremonies on April 22 in the Carson Nugget Hall at WNC’s Carson City campus, and also on April 24 at Virgil Getto Hall in Fallon.

PTK was created in 1918 and has served as a means to honor and encourage academic achievement of community college students. The organization also provides opportunities for individual student growth and development through honors, leadership and service programming. It has more than 2.5 million members and 1,275 chapters worldwide.

To qualify for membership, students must complete a minimum of 12 hours of associate degree coursework with a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher throughout their enrollment at the college.
