Two Silver Springs residents die in Saturday rollover

Two Lyon County residents died in a Saturday afternoon rollover five miles west of Silver Springs on U.S. Highway 50.

The Nevada Highway Patrol identified the two residents on Monday morning. Killed were the driver of the 1995 blue Ford Ranger, Harden Lee Aigner, 19, of Silver Springs, and Anthony Frederick-Wayne Smith, 19, also of Silver Springs.

Aigner, who was transported to Renown Regional Medical Center by Care Flight, died at the hospital. Smith died at the scene. Another passenger, Lee Owen Polson, 20, of Fernley, was also transported to Renown, and he remains there with serious injuries.

The NHP said Aigner and his passengers were headed west on U.S. Highway 50 toward Stagecoach when the pickup’s left rear tire lost its tread, causing Aigner to lose control about 4:30 p.m. The report said Aigner drove off on the shoulder, and the truck overturned, ejecting all three occupants. None of the occupants, said the NHP, was wearing seatbelts when the accident occurred.

This area of U.S. Highway 50 is one lane in each direction with a no passing zone, and the speed limit is 65 mph.

Trooper Tappan Cornmesser of the Nevada Highway Patrol’s Carson City District is investigating this incident.
