He earns 14th save in Wolf Pack’s victory
OMAHA, Neb. — Junior Adam Whitt of Carson City set the program record for saves in a season and helped No. 22 Nevada win a nail-biter in its first-ever game at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha. The Wolf Pack (39-12) downed Creighton, 5-4, Friday night behind two scoreless innings from Whitt, who picked up his 14th save, and Bryce Greager’s go-ahead, two-RBI single in the eighth inning.
Trailing by one in the eighth with two runners in scoring position, Greager singled to right field and scored the deciding runs. Whitt allowed just one hit in the two final innings.
Nevada improves to 39-12 overall, which is tied for the third most wins in program history.
“Some Pack fans will be surprised to hear me say this, but this is our best win of the season,” said head coach Jay Johnson. “To come into a tough environment like this after a long travel day and find a way to win was big from our guys. What a great win.”
Austin Byler and Brooks tallied lead-off singles to open the eighth. Greager’s hit scored the game-winning runs.
Whitt retired the Bluejays 1-2-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning. After allowing a two-out single, Whitt recorded his 42nd strike out of the season to end the game. Whitt finished with one base runner and two strikeouts in 2.0 innings in his record performance. Hs 14th save of the season eclipses Matt Gardner’s 2012 program record (13). Whitt ranks tied for third in the nation in saves.
Nevada scored five runs on nine hits while improving to 12-4 when going without an error. Greager went 2-of-2 with two RBI and a run to lead Nevada. Stevenson (2-of-5) and Byler (2-of-3) also recorded multi-hit games. Nevada used four pitchers as junior Zach Wilkins (2-0) earned the win in relief and Whitt tallied the save.
Game two between the Pack and Bluejays is set for a noon first pitch today at TD Ameritrade Park. Nevada will be attempting to become the third team in program history to reach 40 wins in a season. Don Marchand will have the call of the game on 1060 AM, while live stats and streaming information will be available at NevadaWolfPack.com.
