Local sports roundup: Dayton has strong day on the track

FERNLEY — Dayton High will send approximately 16 athletes to Las Vegas for next week’s state meet at Del Sol High School.

The Dayton boys finished third behind Elko and Fallon, and the girls were fourth behind Truckee, Spring Creek and Elko.

Zach Hawley qualified first in the discus (151-8) and the shot put (55-9 1/2), while Benji Ply was first in the high jump at 6-6 and second in the pole vault at 14-feet. J.J. Ply was second in the 110 hurdles (16.19), fourth in the high jump (6-0) and fourth in the pole vault at 13-feet. Jesus Castaneda qualified second in the discus (135-6) and third in the shot put (46-2 3/4). Dallon Mendoza was second in the 400 (50.82), Tobias Tapley was fourth in the 100 (11.14) and Jason Sandborn was fourth in the discus (125-1).

The Dust Devils also qualified their 400, 800 and 1600-meter relay teams.

On the girls side, Kaylee Turner and Sydney Strickler led the way.

Turner won the discus at 129-11 and the shot put at 36-5. Strickler qualified second in the 100 (13.66) and ran legs on the 800 and 1600-meter relay squads which finished second (1:50.90) and third (4:21.50), respectively. Jessie Ingham, Rebecca Mason and Ashley Mason ran in the 800 event, while Rachel Hadley, Zaria Landis and Kyra Mills teamed with Strickler in the 1600.

Landis qualified fourth in the 1600 (5:32.88) and Rebecca Mason cleared 4-6 in the high jump to finish fourth.

Sierra Lutheran sweeps

Sierra Lutheran won the boys and girls D-4 championship at Fernley on Saturday.

Jacob Rodriquez took second in the 100 (11.70), 200 (24.38) and third in the 400 (55.29) to lead the boys. The Falcons won the 400 relay (48.29), the 800 relay (1:43.07) and the 1600 relay (3:45.49).

Cali Benton won the shot (31-8) and the discus (114-11) and was fourth in the long jump (14-2 1/2). Elaina Marchegger won the 1600 (5:54.41), the 800 (2:34.23) and was second in the 3200 (13:15.54).

The squad placed first in the 800, 1600 and 3200 relays.

SWIMMING

Carson swimmers take 4th, 5th

Carson High finished fourth in boys and fifth in girls at this weekend’s NIAA regional meet at the Carson Aquatic Center.

Nine swimmers qualified for next week’s state meet.

The Senators were led by junior Dagen Kipling, who won the 200 IM (1:57.78) and the 500 free (4:49.03) plus he swam a leg on the Senators’ state qualifying 200-meter medley relay squad which included Tallon Rauch, Jesse Session and Brett Kolb and the 400 free relay team with the same three teammates.

Nicole Van Geel won the 100 free in 56.89, and then teamed with Morgan Nelson, America Brena Gutierrez and Blanca Sosa for third in the 400 free relay in 4:02.13.
