Local sports roundup: Butler finishes 15th in state golf

RENO — Dalton Butler shot his second consecutive 83 to finish in 15th place at the NIAA Division I State Golf Tournament at Montreux Golf & Country Club Tuesday afternoon,

Bishop Manogue won the tournament with an 813, 18 strokes better than Coronado and 25 ahead of third-place Palo Verde. Arbor View (852), Galena (882) and Green Valley (884) rounded out the field.

Butler birdied the 170-yard par-3 3rd and the par-4 13th.

He had back-to-back double bogeys on Nos. 4 and 5 plus another double at the par-3 16th. He tripled the par-4 17th.

“From eight through 16 he played really well, but then he had that double at 16 when he put his ball in the bunker,” Coach Rod Butler said. “On No. 17 he hit his ball in the hazard off the tee. He hit the ball much better today.”

CHS athletics

There are three important dates to remember if you are a prospective Carson High athlete.

On June 11 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., the school is having a sport packet online assistance in the south lab of the library. On June 17 at 6 p.m. there are signups for fall sports in the north foyer. Physicals are at 6:30 p.m. and cost $10.

From June 18 to June 24 and July 27 to Aug. 3, fall athletic packets are accepted by the athletic office from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The athletic office is closed from July 1 through July 27.

Sports packets are available online only at www.carsonhigh.com. Go to the district athletic registration link. The packet must be printed out before submitting in order to sign up for the sport without delay. For more information, call 283-1900.

Carson swimmers set

for state meet

Eight Carson High swimmers are ready for Saturday’s NIAA State Championships at the Carson Aquatic Center.

The best shot for an individual medal would appear to be Dagen Kipling, who won two events at last wek’s regional event, also at Carson Aquatic Center. Kipling also swims on the 200 and 400 free relay squads. Also vying for an individual medal is Nicole Van Geel, who won the 100 free in 56.89.

Tallon Rauch, Jesse Session and Brett Kolb are swimming in both relay events, while Morgan Nelson, America Brena Gutierrez and Blanca Sosa are teaming with Van Geel in a relay.

The meet gets under way at 1 p.m.

The diving portion of the meet is being held at Carson Valley Aquatic Center in Minden.

Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students and $3 for senior citizens. Kids under 8 are free.

McKnight quartet wins

at Thunder Canyon

Steve McKnight, Jerry Hughes, Mike Schellin and Bryan Sample combined for a 131 to win Thunder Canyon Country Club’s One in the Bucket tournament on May 8.

Mike Bennert, Mike McGee, Leland Sullivan and Tony Kane finished second at 136, while Rob Jennings Teats, Willie Pereda and Emmanuel Ramiro were third at 138. Larry Goodnight and Bill Eng won closest to the hole honors for the tee shots on No. 8.

CVGC hosts

Couples League

Carson Valley Golf Club plays host to its Couples League Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

The format is nine holes of golf, cart, dinner and $5 prize fund. The cost per golfer is $30,

Silver Oak hosts

several special events

Silver Oak is hosting three special events, one of which is already under way.

Every Friday from now until Sept. 25, the course is hosting a women’s golf social. The

cost of $25 includes nine holes of golf, range balls, tips from James Potter, assistant pro, and complimentary drinks and snacks. Tee times are between 5 and 5:30 p.m. All levels are welcome to this non-competitive event.

• Coming July 3 is the Glow Ball tournament. The cost is $50 for passport members, $65 for members or $75 for non-members. The cost includes nine holes of golf in a scramble format, range balls, cocktails and apetizers, glow ball supplies and prizes for closest to the hole. There are also raffle prizes.

The event starts at 8:30 p.m.

• Another popular event is the One Putt Junior Golf Academy. Classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday from June 2 through July 30. The cost is $40 per class or $200 for any six classes. Classes are held from 8 to 10 a.m. or 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The price includes green fees, pull carts, golf clubs and Gatorade.

• James Barnett shot a net 63 to win Flight 1 at Tuesday’s Silver Oak Senior Men’s Club event. Tim Ricketts was second with a 66, and Doug Smeltzer and Lew Dodgion tied for third with 68s. Brian Andrews won Flight 2 with a 66, three shots ahead of Chris Gottschalk and four ahead of Joe Paden.

Pemberton triumphs

at Empire Ranch

Bob Pemberton shot a net 64 to win A flight at the recent Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club event.

Jim Shabi was second at 65 and Bill Bibson, via a tie-breaker, was third at 68.

Nick Paul won a tie-breaker over John Hauck to win B flight with a 65, and Nils Sharpe was third at 66. Ivan Lepier won C flight with a 63, two shots better than Donnie Curd and five better than Dennis Small. Chris Nenze won D flight with a 65, while Clark Reid and Moe Dias were second and third with 66s.

Chargers stay unbeaten

in flag football

The Chargers knocked off the Cowboys 40-18 in the Talents Flag Football League.

Zach Guthrie threw four TD passes and Alex Myrehn scored four times. Parker Story and Decarlo Quintana had one TD each. The defense was led by Tristan Hawkins and Jesse Gaspar.
