Memorial Day events planned to honor those who sacrificed

Ceremonies, parades and other events are planned this weekend to honor the men and women who sacrificed in the nation’s military.

Northern Nevada Veterans Coalition is hosting an hour-long Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday at Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, off Exit 48, in Fernley. For more information, go to www.supportnnvc.org.

A program of patriotic tunes with standards from the World War II era by Judith Ames and Rocky Tatarelli is planned at 2 p.m. Monday at the Carson Plaza, 2120 E. Long St.

At 1 p.m. Monday, Carson City will honor service members with its annual service at Lone Mountain Cemetery.

Evergreen Gene’s, 1811 N. Carson St., is hosting its sixth annual free Memorial Day barbecue, offering hot dogs, hamburgers, watermelon, potato salad and all the trimmings, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday. Evergreen Gene’s holds the event annually to thank the community for its support and to honor all veterans and active service members. The Marine Corps League Silver State Detachment 630 of Carson City is honoring fallen Native American military veterans and current Native American service members at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Stewart Indian Cemetery on Clear Creek Road, east of Highway 395 and the Costco stoplight. The annual ceremony pays tribute to Native Americans who contributed to the U.S. military in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam and at present. The event, geared for families, will feature the color guard from Carson High School, the Marine Corps Artillery and bagpipes by Lt. Commander Bledsoe.

Virginia City’s annual Celebration of Heroes Parade is taking place at noon today along C Street to honor the memory of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The parade’s grand marshals will be Brenda and Greg Bolander, Virginia City residents who established a program to hang military banners along C Street to honor both fallen and active duty military members and veterans from Virginia City. The program is in remembrance of their son, Bryan Bolander, killed in action in 2008 during his fourth tour of duty in Iraq. His was the first banner to be hung.

Parade entries include veterans groups, classic car clubs, equestrian groups, a mariachi band and marching units.

Also opening Memorial Day Weekend is the Virginia & Truckee Railroad running only steam trains through the season starting today. For a list of the schedule and to purchase tickets, go to www.virginiatruckee.com.

The nonprofit Warren Engine Co. No. 1 will conduct the first of its summer fundraisers today through Monday at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, which will debut the recently restored historic narrow gauge locomotive “Glenbrook,” of the Carson & Tahoe Fluming and Lumber Co., built in 1875. Locomotives from the museum are scheduled to be operating with train rides at the museum today through Monday.

Warren Engine Company members will be serving hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, and sodas from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day at the train depot. Warren Engine Company related items such as the illustrated 150th anniversary history of the fire company and the Carson City Fire Department, and other items, will be for sale.

St. Hugh of Lincoln Episcopal Outreach Center is hosting a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. Monday at Desert Memorial Gardens in Silver Springs. Refreshments will follow the ceremony.
