City tax rate set at $1.08

This continues the Appeal’s review of news stories and headlines during its Sesquicentennial year.

A $149,188.41 estimated budget for 1955 was given approval by Carson City trustees last night.

The budget sets the city tax rate at $1.08, which is scheduled to raise $35,484.58 in taxes toward meeting the expected expenditures.

The rest of the money will come from non-tax sources, such as building permits, business licenses, etc.

The approval was a formality. Almost all discussion on the budget came at a meeting March 24, at which time the trustees made amendments to the prepared form, which were incorporated into the one approved last night.

Along with passage of the budget, the board authorized city marshal Lester Smith to purchase new radio equipment for the police department.

Authorization had been held up for some time waiting for the budget to be discussed, as the trustees wanted to be sure there would be enough money for purchase of the radio.

Radio equipment authorized consists of a base set for the station and two mobile units for the police cars. Figures from one company gave the cost of the base set at $707 and the mobile unit cost at $467 each.

However, Smith told trustees that another radio company had the sets at approximately $100 under the cost presented last night.

The cost of maintenance of the new sets will be $15 a month, Smith said. At present the city pays the state $400 a year for the sets in use, and pays $5 a month maintenance fee.

Smith explained that the new sets would put Carson on the same frequency as most of the other western Nevada police stations. He said one of the most important features, is that they will be on the same frequency as Reno and Washoe County, and most of the traffic is with Reno.
