Community spotlight: Kalley, Russell shine at long course meet

A total of 44 swimmers swam for the Carson Tigersharks in this past weekend’s Intermountain Classic long course swim meet held at the Carson Aquatic Center.

Ewan Kalley, 8, was the overall high point winner for his age group, while Brynn Russell, 8, came in at second overall high point for her age group.

Kalley won the 100 free and 200 IM; was third in 100 back; fourth in 50 free and 100 breaststroke; and seventh in 50 breast. Russell was second in 50 breast; 100 breast; 100 free and 200 free; third in 200 IM; fifth in 50 free; eighth in 50 back and 100 back; and ninth in 50 fly;

Swimmers who placed in the top 3 of their events were:

• Chris Borges, 8, won the 50 back and 100 back; was eighth in 50 free and 50 breaststroke; and 10th in 100 free;

• Katarina Klatt, 9, was third in 50 free; fourth in 100 back; fifth in 50 back and 100 fly; eighth in 200 IM; 10th in 50 Fly and 100 free;

• Matteas Klatt, 11, was third in 100 back and 200 back; fourth in 50 free and 400 free; fifth in 100 free and 200 free; sixth in 50 back; seventh in 50 fly and 200 IM; and eighth in 100 fly;

• Nick Melsheimer, 10, was second in 50 back and 50 free; third in 50 breaststroke; 50 fly and 100 free; and fourth in 100 breast;

• Jake Xie, 9, was third in 100 fly; 12th in 50 fly; 13th in 50 breast; 14th in 100 breaststroke; 15th in 50 free; 100 free and 200 free; and 17th in 50 back;

Swimmers who placed in the top 8 of their events were: Camryn Aten, Leandra Blake, America Brena, Robbie Daugherty, Brett Kolb, Lilli Kolb, Christy Krahn, Hannah Presley, Bryan Remick, Nora Streng, Andi Urban, and Nicole Van Geel.

Douglas Tigers boys

soccer tourney scheduled

The Douglas High boys soccer team will host its inaugural Douglas Tigers Soccer Invitational on Aug. 28-29.

The preseason tournament will feature Nevada Division I junior varsity and small schools varsity teams, according to Douglas coach Milko Vasquez.

“This tournament enables soccer programs by facilitating much needed games for the developmental teams and schools whose areas may have a limit of number contacts with other soccer programs in Nevada,” Vasquez noted.

Games will be played on the Douglas soccer field and the high school stadium.

Vasquez said the field is being limited to 12 teams. The entry fee is $300 and the registration deadline is July 15.

Chargers win flag

football championship

The Chargers (9-0) beat the Cardinals 49-19 to win the Talents Flag Football playoff championship.

Zach Guthrie threw six TD passes, Alex Myrehn scored twice and had two interceptions, Brock Bensmiller, Decarlo Quintana had two TDs each, and Parker Story scored once. Jesse Gaspar, Caid Milligan and Tristan Hawkins led the defense.

Grass volleyball tourney

slated for June 14

In association with Douglas County Parks & Recreation and the Carson Valley Actve 20-30 Club, the seventh annual grass volleyball tournament is set for June 14 at Lampe Park.

An adult tournament (4 vs. 4) is scheduled for players 16 and over. A youth tournament (6 vs. 6) is for players in fifth grade to 18 years of age. Each team is guaranteed two pool-play games and entry into the single elimination tourney,

Olesek wins Empire

Ranch golf event

Fred Olesek shot a net 61 to win A flight at the recent Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club event on May 20.

Juan Lopez was second with a 64 and George Flamer was third with a 65.

Dick Montoya won B flight with a 64 via a tiebreaker over John Hauck. Nick Paul was third with a 67. Albert Giannotti won C flight with a 65, while Lee Ghiglieri was second with a 66 and Rudy Hammond was third with the same score. George Allison won D flight with a 58, six shots better than Vic Rocha and seven better than Bob Blom.
