The bureau of Land Management and Nevada Department of Corrections held their fourth wild horse adoption events October 17.

A total of 11 horses rounded up from Nevada BLM lands were saddle trained over the past four months by inmates at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center and offered up to bidders.

Although the starting bids for the animals were just $150, the animals went for an average of $3,445. The top bid was a record $15,000 for a four-year-old gendling named Divit.

The successful bidders must properly care for their horses for one year to be eligible to receive official title of ownership from the federal government.

Over the course of the year, 46 horses and two burros were gentled, trained and adopted through the inmate program at the prison. The total raised in this year’s four auctions is $86,725. The money goes to help support the program and to the BLM’s wild horse and burro holding facilities.
