Dayton spikers advance to state

TRUCKEE — The Dayton volleyball team, seeded No. 3, pulled out a thrilling win against No. 2 seed Lowry, 25-18, 17-25, 25-15, 15-25, 15-7 in the Northern Division IA semifinals Saturday to earn a berth in the state tournament.

The Dust Devils went on to lose to Truckee 11-25, 10-25, 14-25 in the finals. Dayton, the No. 2 seed, will open the state tournament in the semifinals Friday against Faith Lutheran.

“My hitters finished the ball and my defense was spot on,” said Dayton coach Monica Halverson about the first game. “Serving was a huge factor in our win as well.”

Halverson said her team struggled to close out games two and four, but dominated games three and five. Shalia Powell’s serving was a key to the game five win, Halverson said.

Libero Rachel Hadley had a huge match wih 30 digs, Powell had seven kills, 25 assists and 14 digs and Ashley Mason added 10 kills and nine digs for Dayton.

About the match against Truckee, which finished league at 18-0, Halverson said. “We played awful. My girls just ran out of steam.”

Hadley had 11 digs and Powell added 10 digs and eight assists against Truckee.

So proud of my Dayton volleyball players, mangers, assistant coaches, parents, and fans that came to Truckee to support and cheer us on,” Halverson said. “We will be practicing hard this week to prepare ourselves for Faith Lutheran. They will challenge us, but we have a lot of fight in us and will come prepared.”

Yerington wins title

YERINGTON — Yerington was taken to five games in the Division III finals before edging Incline 25-17, 14-25, 21-25, 25-9, 15-13 to win the title.

Jordan Bobrick had five kills and five digs, Kassidy Lommori had 21 kills, seven digs and four aces, Brianna Soukup had five kills, eight digs and six aces, Deseree Landa had six digs, Ashley Rife had eight kills, eight digs and 27 assists and Rachel Dane had four aces and eight assists for the Lions (28-12).

Yerington rolled to the finals by beating Lovelock 25-8, 25-8, 25-22 in the semifinals. Jordan Bobrick had eight kills, Kassidy Lommori had 16 kills, six digs and five blocks, Deseree Landa had five digs, Ashley Rife had seven digs and 25 assists and Rachel Dane added eight assists for the Lions.

Virginia City falls

RENO — Virginia City’s season came to an end one win shy of earning a state berth in the Northern Division IV semifinals in a 12-25, 15-25, 15-25 loss to Owyhee a Wooster.

Kelsie Sequeira had six kills and five aces, Bethany Fuller had four kills, Chelsea Nevin ahd one ace, three kills, one block and six assists and Kaitlin Hames had three aces and one kill for the Muckers, which finished at 19-6. “A great season,” Virginia City coach Dennis Young said.
