Carson City weather: clear today, snow to come

A split weekend on the weather front is in store for Carson City and area residents, according to weather watchers.

Sunny and mostly clear skies with a high near 60 today will be followed Sunday by lower temperatures and the start of precipitation, initially in the form of rain mixed with snow in some spots, said Shane Snyder, meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s office in Reno. For the present, however, it’s clear yet bracing autumnal weather laced with afternoon prospects for donning light jackets.

“No issues at all,” Snyder said of today’s forecast, noting temperatures will reach even higher than Friday’s low 50s in the afternoon. However, colder weather and the mixed precipitation are on tap the second half of the weekend.

“It will start out in the foothills Sunday morning,” he said.

Snyder said later Sunday after the sun drops, snow will replace any mixed precipitation and reach the valley floor as both the white stuff and temperatures go lower on the ground and in the thermometer.

The high Sunday will be in the 40s with the subsequent low again dipping below freezing into the mid 20s.

Snyder said the snow could reach one to three inches at higher elevations with perhaps less recorded on the valley floor.

Longer range, according to other forecasters, the work week will offer mostly clear skies except on Tuesday, when it will be partly cloudy. Precipitation won’t likely, and highs will be from around 40 on Monday to 55 degrees on Thursday before receding to about 50 come Friday. Night time lows throughout the week will be in the 20s.

In a side note, Snyder said Carson City and environs aren’t likely to be impacted as much during this weekend’s precipitation period as is the Reno area, where winds and possibly heavier snow could threaten to cause tree limb breakage or other problems.
