Senior Center’s Christmas dinner to help meals program

The Carson City Senior Center is presenting Moonlight & Mistletoe, a Christmas dinner of Cornish game hen, wild rice, vegetables, rolls and dessert on Dec. 5 in the Sagebrush Room of the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive.

Doors open at 5 p.m. Dinner follows at 6 p.m. There will also be dancing, a silent auction, a wine and beer bar, a 50/50 raffle and pictures with Mr. and Mrs. Clause.

Nevada Reads author to present at Minden library

Laura McBride, whose debut novel, “We are Called to Rise,” the current Nevada Reads title, will be speaking at the Douglas County Library in Minden at 10 a.m. Nov. 21.

McBride is scheduled to receive the Silver Pen Award from the Friends of the University Libraries at University of Nevada, Reno, on Nov. 19. Her book is available for loan from the Minden and Zephyr Cove libraries.

Commodity food distribution is Nov. 20

Friends In Service Helping, or FISH, will distribute free USDA commodity foods to Carson City families from 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 20 at the Carson City Community Center. No one will be admitted before 9 a.m.

Families must sign an issuance sheet at the Community Center certifying household’s annual income doesn’t exceed federal poverty guidelines which are monthly gross income of $1,471.25 for a single and $1,991.25 for a couple. For each additional household member, add $520. Proof of Carson City residency is required, and photo identification must be provided.

Barnes & Noble holding book drive for area school

Barnes & Noble Reno is hosting its annual Holiday Book Drive through Jan. 1 to benefit Silver Stage Elementary School. The annual event collects books for local nonprofits, including schools, libraries, literacy organizations and homeless centers. Last year, more than 1.5 million books were provided to more than 650 local charitable organizations who provided services to children across the country. Babes in Toyland’ performances planned

Wild Horse Children’s Theater is putting on a classic holiday musical whose characters are based on those of “Mother Goose.”

“Babes in Toyland” will play at 7 p.m. Fridays; 2 and 7 p.m. Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays from Dec. 4 through 13 in the Brewery Arts Center’s Performance Hall, 511 W. King St.

Workshop about how to grow greens planned

Western Nevada College Specialty Crop Institute is offering a Growing Greens in Hoop Houses workshop from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dec. 5 at the University of Nevada, Reno, Knudtsen Resource Center.

There will be presentations by area greens growers and a hoop house tour at the Desert Farming Initiative at UNR. Topics include: best varieties of greens to grow, pest control, harvesting techniques, food safety, packaging, sales and marketing.

The cost is $25 for anyone registering by Nov. 28, and $35 for anyone registering after that date. Lunch is included, and seating is limited. Online registration is at http://www.wnc.edu/ce/sci/.

Annual Elks Hoop Shoot planned

Carson City Elks Lodge No. 2177 is hosting its annual Hoop Shoot, open to children ages 8-13 as of April 1, 2016, on Saturday, Jan. 2, at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St.

There’s no cost to compete. Registration is at 9 a.m. on the day of the event, with the Hoop Shoot beginning at 10. Each contestant will shoot 25 free throws in his or her age category. Tennis shoes are mandatory. Winners will advance to the district competition in Reno on Jan. 16 at Wooster High School, followed by the state competition in Hawthorne, regionals in Las Vegas, and nationals in Chicago.
