Senator Square: Craft fair takes place at CHS Friday and Saturday

The Carson High School Craft Fair is Friday and Saturday. Hundreds of crafters from all over Nevada and northern California will fill both gymnasiums and halls of CHS. All money raised from the craft fair is donated to the various student clubs and organizations at CHS. Come support this annual tradition. Santa will also be on hand for photos.

CULINARY NEWS

Culinary Arts is teaming up with Northern Nevada Dream Center to help feed families. You can support the Culinary Arts team by letting them bake your Thanksgiving pies. Pumpkin, apple or pecan pies are available. You can order your pies at: www.pietotherescue.org. Orders will be taken until Nov. 22 and pick up will be Wednesday, Nov. 25. Contact Penny Reynolds at 283-1910 for more information about this cause.

KIDS IN TRANSITION

Students in transition need your help! Carson City School District currently has 400 students in transition and this number continues to grow. These students are in need of socks, personal items and toiletries. Please help by donating items or cash donations. All cash donations raised go directly to the McKinney-Vento Student in Transition program. Drop off locations are here at the high school, Lakeridge tennis club, Fritsch elementary school, Business and Industry Real Estate division, and at A Pawsitive Image.

SKILLSUSA MTG

There will be a SkillsUSA meeting on Tuesday in the culinary class room at lunch time. Please wear your RED Skills USA shirts. We will be taking yearbook pictures and getting information about the craft fair.

KEY CLUB NEWS

There will be a brief meeting for Key Club on Tuesday at lunch in Ms. Bale’s classroom (room 119). New members and interested students are welcome to come see what we’re all about. Brownies will be served at the meeting.

BOYS TENNIS

The CHS boys tennis team won its second consecutive academic state championship. We have 21 boys on the team with 11 4.0 students and an overall team GPA of 3.71. Congratulations to Coach Hal Wilkins and the team!

BOWLING

The CHS bowling team will begin our competitive season this week. There’s a mandatory practice Monday from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at Gold Dust West. There will be a parent meeting with paperwork, schedules, and information at the end of practice on Monday. Wednesday are signups and bowling at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno at 3 p.m. See Mrs. Mannschreck in room 231 if you have any questions.

FFA AT NATIONALS

The following was submitted by Michelle Harrison, senior member of Future Farmers of America (FFA). More than 65,000 students and FFA educators came together to honor agriculture at the 88th National FFA Convention and Expo in Louisville, Ky., October 28-31. Students from every state, including Puerto Rico and the U.S Virgin Islands spent the week competing in different career development events, working at a Hall of States booth, exploring the expo center, participating in workshops, attending sessions put on by the National officers, making friends, and developing memories that will last a lifetime. Five students from Carson High School made the trip to Louisville. Holly Strasser, Michelle Harrison, Whitney Bibee and Jose Cazares built and worked at the Hall of States booth while Hayden Story competed in Dairy Handler. The Hall of States booth focused on the mining and agricultural side of Nevada and Hayden left it all in the ring bringing back a silver medal. This convention showcases the importance of agriculture and the incredible impact it has on the youth of the United States. CHS couldn’t be more proud of Hayden Story. Students in Mr. Mann’s agriculture classes are counting down the days until the 89th National FFA Convention and Expo which will take place in Indianapolis, Ind., next year.

HOSA NEWS

Throughout the month of October HOSA members sold breast cancer lanyards to raise money for breast cancer awareness. They raised $450 which was all donated to a staff member battling breast cancer. Currently, through the month of November, HOSA students are selling paracord bracelets to raise money for pancreatic cancer awareness. Bracelets are gray with a purple cord woven through creating a purple ribbon (purple represents pancreatic cancer) and the cost is $4 each. STUDENT OF THE WEEK

This week’s student of the week is Liliana Barajas. Liliana is hard working and always puts in her best effort. She has a wonderful attitude towards her peers and teachers. Thanks for all your hard work at CHS Liliana!

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

Carson High School is pleased to recognize Andy Hsu as this week’s senior in the spotlight. Andy has a cumulative GPA of 4.3 and a weighted GPA of 4.0. Andy is currently taking a full class load which includes three Advanced Placement classes, two Honors classes, Web Design and Martial Arts.

Andy is ready for graduation and is planning on going into the United States Marine Corps. He’s working part time and participates in physical training at least two days a week. Andy is ready to do more in order to prepare himself for the challenge of boot camp and the Marine Corps experience. He’s anxious to begin his career serving his country. Congratulations Andy, Carson High is proud of you!
