The Nevada Department of Transportation is adding an extra merge lane connecting Eastlake Boulevard to southbound I-580/U.S.395 at the north end of Carson City.
NDOT officials said motorists should expect some lane closures during the construction period.
The work is part of a larger project to repave the old road surface and seismically retrofit bridges through Washoe Valley. Repaving of the freeway through the valley began a month ago.
The construction will extend the existing merge lane to the Carson Street off ramp by some 2,700 feet to improve safety for cars merging in that area.
The contractor, Q&D Construction, has already repaved some 7 miles of the freeway and plans to finish the work in the spring.
An NDOT spokesman said the road was last repaved in 2004 and was in need of resurfacing.
The rest of the $15 million project will include the seismic retrofits and enhancements to the Bellevue Bridge in the middle of the valley.
