Local athletes named to all-league teams

Rogelio Herrera, Guillermo Hernandez and Peter Garrett were a big reason why Carson High finished second in the Sierra League, and then later went on to win the regional and state championships.

All three were first-team Sierra League selections. Forward Abel Sanchez, the hero of the state tournament, defender Christian Martinez and midfielder Jon Limon were second-team picks. Midfielder/defender Guillermo Perez-Morris and keeper Efren Ramirez were honorable mention picks.

Herrera finished with 20 goals, Hernandez added eight and Garrett, along with his stellar defensive play, scored three, all on headers.

“On top of his (Herrera’s) scoring, he was a good team player,” coach Mike Alvarez said. “Guillermo was an intergal part of our offense that produced a lot of wins (17-3-1). I would say Peter was arguably the best defender in our league. After we beat Cimarron in the state playoffs, their coach made it a point to seek Peter out after the game to congratulate him.”

If the voting had taken place at the end of the season, Sanchez would definitely have been a first-team selection. He had 14 regular-season goals and added three in Carson’s two state-playoff wins, including two direct free kick scores in the 2-1 overtime win over Wooster in the state finals.

Limon didn’t have a goal during the season, but he was all over the field.

“He never started a game, but he would come in and stay in for a long time,” Alvarez said. “He was tenacious out there and made smart plays in the midfield. Christian is a very smart soccer player.”

Perez-Morris had two goals and was effective in the midfield and in the back row when injuries forced him to a different spot. Ramirez had six shutouts between the posts.

Douglas was represented by forward Pedro Vega and defender Koby Hinnant, while keeper Luke Heinrichs was a second-team pick. Juan Lopez and Edgar Hernandez were honorable mention.

The Tigers’ Milko Vasquez was Coach of the Year, Wooster’s Sal Jimenez was the top forward, Wooster’s Javier Martinez was the top midfielder and Raul Venegas of Wooster was named the top defender.

Volleyball

Jaycie Roberts and Juliana Anderson were two of the best hitters in northern Nevada, and no-brainer selection for the seven-person all-Sierra first team.

Middle blocker Maddie Jergesen was a second-team pick.

Roberts led the team in kills (254) and digs (300) in leading Carson to a second-place finish and a berth in the regional finals for the second consecutive year. Anderson was second on the team in kills (218) and third on the team in digs (232). Roberts finished with 54 blocks, while Anderson contributed 45 service aces and had 38 blocks.

Jergesen led the team in blocks with 135 and was third on the team with 172 kills.

Girls soccer

Valerie Sue Meyer was named the Sierra League Defensive Player of the Year, as the Senators won the regular-season title and reached the regional semifinals before being eliminated.

Meyer scored one goal and added two assists, but it was her steady and smart play on the back line that earned her the honor.

“Valerie Sue trained hard and worked hard every day,” coach Greg Lehman said. “She was a smart player and had speed and vision on the field.”

Midfielder Julie Torres added five goals and five asists to steady decision making in the midfield, fullback/midfielder Lindy Lehman added two goals (unofficially) and three assists in the regular season and provided the team with stout defense and leadership. Isabella Wakeling led the team with 14 regular-season scores, tops on the squad.

“Lindy and Julie were calm (and confident) with the ball,” Lehman said. “Defenders would be right on them and they wouldn’t panic. Technically, both were very good. Isabella’s confidence level was up, and with her athletic ability and technical level, it made her a good player.”

Forward Mallory Otto and midfielders Melissa Glanzmann and Lauren Hudak were second-team picks, and keeper Samantha Bishop and Nahim Gutierrez were named honorable mention. Otto had nine goals according to MaxPreps, while Hudak added two goals and eight assists. Glanzmann added one goal and Gutierrez added three goals and two asists. Bishop had seven shutouts and 13 wins.

Cross Country

Josefina Ortiz-Osty finished eighth at the regional meet, earning her a second-team selection. Cross country selections are based on postseason finishes.
