SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: Recognizing top fall sports athletes

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: Last week the Appeal recognized the Carson High boys soccer team for winning the state title. Now it’s time for the Appeal to honor many of the other top local teams and athletes from the fall sports season.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson High football team for winning the Sierra League and advancing to the Northern Division I championship game for the third straight year where it lost to Reed. Also to Asa Carter who was named Sierra League Player of the Year and Regional Offensive Player of the Year and Ikela Lewis who was named as Sierra League Defensive Player of the Year.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Carson High volleyball team who advanced to the Northern Division I finals for the second straight year where it lost to Manogue and to the Dayton volleyball team for advancing to the state tournament.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Douglas High girls soccer team for advancing to the state tournament and to the Carson girls soccer team for winning the Sierra League title.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Douglas girls tennis team for winning the Northern Division I title. Also to Douglas’ Madelyn Landerfelt for qualifying for the state tournament in girls singles and to Douglas’ Kayleigh Carlson and Anne Pomrey and Tara Cottrill and Kylie Coziahr for qualifying for state in girls doubles.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Sierra Lutheran’s Elaina Marchegger who won the Division III/IV state title in girls cross country; to Douglas’s Megan Ruffo who took sixth in the state Division I girls race and the Carson’s Josefina Ortiz-Osty who placed 20th; to Douglas’ John Munyan who placed third in the state Division I boys race; to Sierra Lutheran’s Jared Marchegger who took fourth and Richard McNeely who placed sixth at state; and to the Douglas boys and girls cross country teams and the Sierra Lutheran boys and girls cross country teams for making it to the state meet. Sierra Lutheran’s girls finished as the state runner-up.
