Notes of a trip to Humboldt by John Wasson, 9-17-1865: Captain Payne’s Company struck a quartz ledge about 15 miles from the camp at Unionville. There are good water privileges and considerable land. There is little timber near within 50 miles of the camp. Captain Payne is now under marching orders for Dunn Glen and ordered to hold himself in readiness to proceed to Summit Lake. A petition by citizens was presented for continuance of troops — The citizens and travelers need protection here. Indians have been noticed west of the main road in Queen’s River Valley. Camp fires have been noticed west of the main road there and 50 to 60 miles northwest Indians were believed to be there ...

Admission Day: Kathie Blaikie, Miss Nevada for 1965, will be the Grand Marshal of the Nevada Day Parade. Miss Blaikie who just competed in the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, N.J. was “very excited” to lead the parade as Grand Marshal.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
