James gang runs away with the win

MINDEN — Quarterback Bryce James and the Douglas Tigers drove 65 yards in eight plays to score the go-ahead touchdown with 30 seconds left to play in their 21-19 Homecoming victory against Bishop Manogue on Friday night.

James scored on a 1-yard keeper on fourth-and-goal to cap a drive that started with 1:53 showing on the clock in the Sierra League opener for both teams. Cody Ball’s 28-yard reception at the 9 set up the Tigers with first-and-goal.

Manogue had just taken its first lead of the night on a 15-yard run by sophomore Angelo Reviglio. The Miners had rallied back from a 15-0 halftime deficit as Moises Aparicio scored on a 1-yard touchdown and then returned a punt 78 yards for another touchdown to make it 15-13 with 6:35 left in the third quarter.

Manogue threatened again early in the fourth quarter, however, Josh Jensen led a defensive charge that stopped a third-down run from the 3 and then Jensen came through with a quarterback sack at the 12. Moments later, a 28-yard field goal attempt failed, due largely to pressure up the middle from Trevor Tierney.

Manogue, which missed three field goal attempts on the night, took the lead on a nine-play, 76-yard drive highlighted by a 17-yard completion from freshman quarterback Lincoln Hauck to Jordan Hunt and 11-yard pass to Artie Henderson.

Douglas took a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter when James completed a 3-yard touchdown pass to tight end Reagan Roberson on fourth-and-goal to cap a 15-play, 80-yard drive. The Tigers scored again on their next possession when James punched in a 1-yard touchdown run. Moses Broom caught a pass for the 2-point conversion to make it 15-0. After James scored the go-ahead touchdown, the Miners were denied on their final possession when defensive end Taran Grove deflected a pass and pulled down the interception.

James finished the night 12-for-22 for 126 yards and one interception.
