Prep roundup: Dayton’s scoreless streak continues in FB

WINNEMUCCA — One streak came to an end on Friday night, while another one continued.

Lowry High School used three touchdowns from Jacob Hernandez to beat Dayton 40-0, as the Buckaroos celebrated Homecoming by picking up their first win of the season. Meanwhile, Dayton remained scoreless on the season and now has been outscored 298-0 in six games.

Lowry scored less than three minutes into the contest, when Darrin Nelson picked up a loose ball after a Dayton fumble and scampered 32 yards for the touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

After an unsuccessful fake punt, the Buckaroos needed to drive just 37 yards to tack on to the advantage and did so, on a 4-yard run by Hernandez with 4:57 left in the first quarter to go in front 14-0.

Dayton went three-and-out on its next two possessions, and Lowry increased the lead to 21-0 with just two minutes gone in the second quarter on a 1-yard run by Alan Mayorga.

Aided by two personal foul penalties, the Dust Devils moved the ball down the field and picked up their initial first down of the contest, with six minutes left in the first half. Dayton quarterback Blake Fletcher continued to move Dayton down the field, but the drive stalled on downs inside the 10-yard line.

Lowry took a 28-0 lead in the early minutes of the third quarter on a 7-yard run by Hernandez. Dayton had its best chance to score on its next possession. The Dust Devils (0-6 overall, 0-5 Division I-A North) drove back down the field, but on the first play of the fourth quarter, on fourth-and goal from the 3-yard line. Fletcher was intercepted in the end zone.

The Buckaroos (1-4 overall, 1-4 Division I-A North) tacked on two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, one by Hernandez on a 37-yard run and the last on a 7-yard run by Victor Rosas.

VOLLEYBALL

Carson goes 0-3

The Carson high volleyball team went 0-3 Friday in the high-powered Nike Tournament of Champions in Arizona.

Carson did take one game from Millennium, losing 15-25, 25-20, 12-15. The Senators also lost to Immaculate 19-25, 15-25 and to Desert Vista 15-25, 6-25.

Against Millennium, Jaycie Roberts had seven kills and eight digs, Juliana Anderson had seven kills, Maddie Jergesen had eight kills, Abby Pradere had 14 assiss and seven digs, Natalie Anderson had 11 assists and five digs and Kylie Riske added four kills and four blocks.

Against Immaculate, Roberts had five kills, Juliana Anderson had five kills and six digs, Pradere had seven assists, Natalie Anderson had seven assists and Mackenzie Tucker added five digs.

Against Desert Vista, Natalie Anderson had 12 assists, Jergesen had five kills and Roberts added five digs.

Tigers sweep Galena

RENO — Douglas made it back-to-back sweeps by handling Galena, 25-21, 25-15 and 25-15 Thursday night.

Isabelle Peterson and Aubrey Caires led Diuglas hitters with eight kills apiece while Johnnie Saletti added seven and Taryn Allmet six. Peterson also contributed eight digs and two blocks. Saletti added three digs and three assists. Talyn Jackson finished with 18 assists, four aces, five kills and seven digs.

Dust Devils stop Fallon

DAYTON — Led by Brianda Diaz and Makenna Olsen, Dayton knocked off Fallon 19-25, 25-14, 25-22 and 25-15 Thursday night.

Diaz had 13 kills and 13 digs and Olsen added nine kills, a block and assist. Hailey Wells had seven kills and eight digs, while Rachel Hadley had five aces and 12 digs.

CROSS COUNTRY

Ortiz-Osty fifth at Reed

SPARKS — Josefina Ortiz-Osty had an outstanding effort at the Reed Invitational, taking fifth in the girls race for Carson in 20:50.

Carson didn’t have its top two runners in the boys and girls races as they were healing up for another big meet next weekend in Clovis, Calif. For the girls, Eveline Delgado sat out with a sore back and Blanca Sosa sat out with a sore hip.

For the boys, Ian VanRensselaer sat out with a nagging knee injury and Hector Gomez-Barrios sat out with a sore ankle.

Carson coach Pete Sinnott noted Ortiz-Osty had been running about 50th against the same group of runners before her fifth place finish at Reed. “She’s just getting stronger,” Sinnott said.

Carson’s next best finisher in the girls race was Rheanna Jackson, who took 49th in 23:03 in the 3.1-mile race.

Freshman Brandon Copeland led Carson’s boys, taking 52nd in 19:09. Right behind was Kiefer Catron, who took 53rd in 19:12. Also for Carson, Miles Bean finished 56th in 19:23, Logan Mead finished in 19:38 and Ethan Lopes finished in 19:41.

Carson’s junior varsity boys had an outstanding meet, taking third, moving up from an eighth place finish at the Twilight meet to begin the year.

Hunter Rauh led Carson’s JV boys as he led much of the race before finishing fourth in 19:26.

Dayton boys, girls take first

Dayton boys and girls both took first at a meet hosted by Silver Stage.

On the 3.1-mile downhill course, all of Dayton’s runners ran personal bests. “It was fun to watch,” Dayton coach Shawn Anderson said.

For Dayton’s boys, Brady Heusser took second in 17:07, Hunter Hatch was fourth in 18:00, Kobey Workman took seventh in 18:48, Austin Duarte was 10th in 19:20 and Jason Logan placed fifth in 19:21. Jared Logan finished right behind his brother in 12th in 1926 and Madsen Evans was 13th in 19:31.

For Dayton’s girls, Kaeli Barwig finished third (23:56) and Emma Heusser finished fifth (25:33). “Emma is a new runner for us and obviously really liked the downhill,” Anderson said. “She took almost 10 minutes off her time from last week.”

TENNIS

CHS boys edged

RENO — Carson (6-5 in league) and Manogue played as evenly as possible before Manogue prevailed 10-9. The matche was tied 3-3 after the first round, 6-6 after the second round and 9-9 after the third round. The two teams also went 3-3 against each other in the six tiebreaker sets, but Manogue won on the strength of winning more games 36-32.

Taylor Saarem swept his singles matches 6-4, 6-0, 6-1, Ryan Tomita won 6-3, 6-3 and in doubles, Danny Dudley and Nico Salm swept their matches 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 and Zach Simms and Jayson Artz won 6-3 for Carson.

CHS girls fall

Carson fell to Monogue 13-5. In singles for Carson, Emma Breeding won 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) and lost her other match 5-7 while Shaylin Segura won 7-5. In doubles, Nancy Henrickson and Mikaela Asby won 6-3 and Emily McCaskill and Amanda Schulz won 6-0 for the Senators.

SOCCER

Douglas boys win

RENO — Douglas (7-4-3, 3-4-2) scored two goals in the last 15 minutes to pull out a 2-1 win at Manogue. Manogue scored on penalty kick caused from the lack of communication by the Douglas defense.

But the Tigers came back to score on a goal by Koby Hinnant. Alejando Sanz then scored the game-winner for Douglas when his shot deflected off of a defender into the goal.

Edgar Hernandez also played well defensively for the Tigers.

Dayton boys fall

DAYTON — Dayton played its best game of the year in falling 2-0 to unbeaten Sparks.

After Sparks took an early 1-0 lead, Dayton goalie Gabriel Dums kept the Dust Devils in the game by denying Sparks on a penalty kick.

Jonathan Torres, Jorddy Diaz, Ivan Alfaro and Carlos Landa played well defensively for Dayton. In the last 10 minutes, Sparks scored for the final margin.

“I told my team that I feel like we walked away with a win,” Dayton coach Luis Melgarejo said.

“We can beat any team if we play like we did today, I’m very proud of their improvement.”
