Local roundup: CHS goes 1-3 in Arizona

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Carson High’s volleyball team concluded its first-ever appearance at the Nike Tournament of Champions by posting a 1-3 record on Saturday.

After losing its opening match Saturday to Horizon, Carson was sent to the bronze bracket.

Carson knocked off Yerington 25-15 and 25-18, but then lost to Bishop Gorman 12-25 and 14-25. Bishop’s School knocked off Carson 25-22 and 25-15.

Carson finished the event 1-6. The Senators will host Galena Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Dayton sweeps Sparks

SPARKS — Dayton High’s volleyball team improved to 6-2 with a 25-7, 25-22 and 25-17 win over Sparks Friday night.

“We played fundamentally sound volleyball,” Dayton coach Monica Halverson said. “My bench players took the court and played solid. I was pleased to see them working together and running plays off of what Sparks sent back to us.

“Im so proud of my girls working so well together. We’re in good standing to be a contender for playoffs and state.”

Rebecca Mason had two kills, an ace, and two digs, and Katie Turner had two aces and one dig.

• In JV action, Dayton beat Sparks 25-14 and 25-21. Aleea Howe led the Dust Devils with five aces, seven assists and a kill. Mackenzie Montero finished with five kills, a dig and an assist. Luisa Flores served up three aces.

Virginia City falls

SMITH VALLEY — Virginia City (11-3, 6-2) fell 15-25, 17-25, 25-16, 14-25 at Smith Valley. Kelsi Sequeira and three aces, six kills and eight assists, Kim Tlapa had 10 digs and one kill, Bethany Fuller had one ace, seven kills and one block, Chelsea Nevin had one ace, six kills, two blocks and 10 assists, Jordan Sedden had one ace, three kills and four blocks and Kaitlin Hames added two aces, one kill and four blocks for Virginia City.

Sierra Lutheran JV loses

HAWTHORNE — Hawthorne knocked off the Falcons 25-20, 21-25 and 15-5 Friday night. Briana Mofhitz-Faieta led the Falcons with four kills, three assists and 10 digs. Amanda Almeida and Faye Carnes had two kills and one block each. Carnes also added four digs.

BOYS SOCCER

Dayton boys tie Fallon

FALLON — Dayton scored in the final minute to earn a 2-2 tie against Fallon Saturday afternoon.

Jorddy Diaz and Victor Gomez scored for the Dust Devils.

GIRLS SOCCER

Dayton loses two

Fallon’s girls scored five times in the first half en route to a 6-0 win over Dayton Saturday morning.

No other information was provided.

On Friday, Dayton lost 7-2 to Sparks. Sydney Strickler scored both Dayton goals.

Douglas-Carson game moved

The Douglas-Carson JV and varsity boys soccer matches scheduled for Saturday have been moved to Friday night. Game times are 5 and 7 p.m. at CHS.

TENNIS

Team regionals set for Tuesday

The Carson High boys and girls tennis teams travel to Galena Tuesday for the first round of the Division I regional team tournament.

The girls match starts at noon and the boys match begins at 3 p.m.

A win would send Carson to the semifinals on Thursday at the site of the higher-seeded team.

Both Carson teams went 6-5 in regular-season action.

JC SOFTBALL

WNC smothers Feather River

The Wildcats scored in every inning en route to an easy 15-3 win over host Feather River on Saturday.

Melanie Mecham had four hits while Gabby Canibeyaz and Kaylee Jaussi added three each,

Kristina George threw five innings to get the win.
