General Sheridan’s visit to Virginia City. The following telegram was received by Mayor Currie (mayor of Virginia City) at 4:24 p.m. yesterday from which it appears that the folds at the Bay have not gone done admiring the little big general there yet. We have seen it stated that the general would come by way of Lake Bigler. This will fetch him in Carson for a brief stay.

Lazy officials. It has come to our knowledge that certain county officers are delinquent in the matter of keeping business hours. We believe that in the absence of any statutory provision governing this matter the public good would seem to demand that all county officers should be in attendance at their offices during ordinary business hours, unless officially absent.

100 years ago

Fire at Aurora. A fire Wednesday night in Aurora destroyed the Northern saloon and restaurant and barber shop. Buildings in the rear of Cain’s store were afire several times, but the flames were extinguished without severe loss. The fire started from a defective flue in the restaurant (Hawthorne Bulletin).

70 years ago

The old Reno Black Maria broke down and whisker less citizens of Carson City have had a brief breathing spell in consequence. Their days of grace are short, however, because an even more vicious “hurry up” wagon is now being completed at the state penitentiary and will be in service by Wednesday.

50 years ago

An estimated months work will be needed to repair Tahoe Miss, the racing hydroplane damaged in Sunday’s race at San Diego, Harry Volpe, the boat’s manager, said today. Driver Chuck Thompson had to jump out at an estimated 75 miles per hour when Tahoe Miss, owned by Bill Harrah, caught fire during the race.

Karen Zupon and Deborah Wetzel, former television personalities, have made the jump to become top level aids for Gov. Richard Bryan and Attorney General Brian McKay.
