Prep roundup: Slow on the draw, CHS still wins

RENO — Carson High got off to a sluggish start, but scored three unanswered goals to knock off Damonte Ranch, 3-1, Wednesday night in a Sierra League boys match.

Carson is now 10-2 entering Saturday’s showdown at 1 p.m. against league leading Wooster which is 12-0 after its easy win over Douglas.

After the game, however, Michael Alvarez looked more like a coach who lost 3-1 instead of winning 3-1.

“My issue is at this point of the season I’m not happy with some of the errors we’re making and the lack of communication,” Alvarez said. “I talked to the team at halftime, and we can’t keep making those types of mistakes and play catch-up.”

Alvarez was referring to Damonte’s only goal of the night which came from Miguel Rojas-Duarte in the fourth minute of the contest. Duarte was ejected in the 53rd minute after picking up his second yellow card of the night.

“Two things,” Alvarez said. “The first was one of the defenders was ball watching, and the second thing was that the keeper (Efren Ramirez) didn’t take charge of things back there.”

Damonte got only six shots the rest of the game, and none were serious threats. Carson, meanwhile, finished with 16 shots. The Senators were turned away several times by DR keeper Kyle Wilson.

“Once again, kudos to their keeper,” Alvarez said. “He saved at least two other goals.”

Carson tied the game at 1 in the 22nd minute when Osvaldo Gomez sent a through ball to Abel Sanchez, who slid it past Wilson.

Nine minutes later, the Senators took the lead for good at 2-1 when Rogelio Herrera took a pass from Guillermo Perez-Morris and scored.

Herrera had a chance to score again in the latter moments of the first half, but had trouble corralling a high bouncing ball, and didn’t get off a clean shot.

Damonte’s Lucio Alvarez got off a shot in the first minute of the second half which Ramirez deflected away.

A minute after Duarte was ejected, Sanchez made it 3-1 in the 54th minute. Guillermo Hernandez was credited with the assist.

Carson had a chance for a fourth goal after Brian Llamas was pulled down in the goalie box. Hernandez took the PK, and scored not once but twice. Each successful kick was waved off because Carson players had entered the kicking area. On his third attempt, Hernandez was turned away by Wilson.

In the JV game, Eddie Porter scored a hat trick for the third straight game to lead Carson to an easy 8-0 win. Danny Manzo, Ramon Rojas, Isael Lopez, Brendan Sevilla and Danny Escalant all scored a goal apiece.

Wooster 8, Douglas 1

MINDEN — Steven Garcia scored two goals and assisted on two others as Wooster continued its undefeated season with an 8-1 Sierra League win against Douglas.

Salvador Jimenez and Kendrick Duve also scored twice for Wooster (12-0), which surged to a 4-0 halftime lead against Douglas (4-6-2 league, 8-6-3 overall).

Pedro Vega scored for the Tigers in the second half, assisted by Juan Aguayo.

Douglas hosts Galena on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Keith Roman Field.

Wooster (12-0 overall and league) hosts Carson in a key contest on Saturday. The Colts edged Carson 4-3 on Sept. 30.

Fernley edges Dayton boys

FERNLEY — The Vaqueros scored twice in the first half en route to a 2-1 win over the Dust Devils.

Dayton’s only goal came when Jacob Duran converted a penalty kick. “My players weren’t focused on the game,” Dayton coach Luis Melgarejo said. “We had a better attitude in the second half. We had more scoring opportunities, but we failed to finish.”

CHS fares well in regionals

RENO — Two singles players and two doubles teams are still alive after the first day of play at the NIAA Division I regionals on Wednesday.

Taylor Saarem won 6-2 and 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals, while Ryan Tomita won 2-6, 7-5 and 7-6.

The doubles tandem of Danny Dudley and Nico Salm won 6-2 and 6-1. Jayson Artz and Zach Simms won 6-0, 2-6 and 7-6.

VOLLEYBALL

Yerington sweeps Lakers

YERINGTON – Kassidy Lommori had 16 kills, two blocks and eight aces to lead the Lions to a 25-8, 25-13 and 25-19 win over North Tahoe Wednesday night.

Setter Ashley Rife had six kills and 19 assists plus an ace, block and dig.

FLAG FOOTBALL

CHS, Douglas ROTCs collide

The Junior ROTC programs at Carson and Douglas will have their own version of the Army-Navy game Saturday at 1 p.m. at Douglas High when the CHS Navy Senators take on the Douglas Army Tigers in a flag football game.

Ticket sales and concession sales will go toward funding the local JROTC programs.
