Prep roundup: CHS players make q-finals

Carson High’s Taylor Saarem made a strong charge at a semifinal berth before falling in the quarterfinals in boys singles at the Northern Division I Championships.

Also for Carson, Danny Dudley and Nico Salm in boys doubles and Anya Woodbury made the quarterfinals.

Saarem lost to Damonte Ranch’s Natale Castelli 7-5, 4-6, 1-6 in the quarterfinals. Dudly and Salm lost to the No. 3 seed from Reno 2-6, 4-6 in the quarterfinals while Woodbury lost to No. 2 seed Madelyn Landerfelt of Douglas in the quarterfinals 2-6, 1-6.

Dayton shines

RENO — Dayton’s boys finished second out of 11 teams in a meet hosted by Sparks at Rancho San Rafael Park. “They ran their butts off today,” Dayton coach Shawn Anderson said.

Brady Huesser finished sixth for Dayton’s boys, finishing the 3.1-mile course in 18:09. “Brady has been consistent all year and should qualify for the state meet at divisions in two weeks,” Anderson said.

Also for Dayton, Hunter Hatch finished in ninth (18:45), Kobey Workman finished in 22nd (19:44) and Austin Duarte finished in 29th (20:14). “Austin has improved immensely this season,” Anderson said. “He took over three minutes off his time from last year at the same race.”

In the girls race, Kaeli Barwig finished 16th (24:06) and Emma Heusser finished 22nd (25:36) for Dayton out of 51 runners in the race.

BOYS SOCCER

Douglas 1, Galena 1

MINDEN — Koby Hinnant’s second-half goal lifted Douglas into a tie in its Senior Night contest against Galena.

Douglas (4-6-3 league, 8-6-4 overall) erased a 1-0 deficit in the 52nd minute after Alejandro Sanz fed a through ball from near midfield Hinnant ran down and then beat the goalkeeper one-on-one to score the equalizer.

Galena (7-2-3, 8-3-3) had taken a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute and held a 6-1 advantage on the shot chart at halftime.

The Tigers turned the tables after the intermission, however, and outshot the Grizzlies by a 6-1 margin.

Flavi Lopez also had a shot from 15 yards out that caromed off the crossbar in the 60th minute.

Douglas goalkeeper Luke Heinrichs collected four saves on the night, three in the first half.

VC wins

VIRGINIA CITY — Virginia City (15-3, 9-2) beat Portola, Calif., 26-24, 26-11, 13-25, 25-21. Kelsi Sequeira had five aces, five kills and five assists, Bethany Fuller had three aces, eight kills, two blocks and five digs, Chelsea Nevin had two aces, three kills, one block and five assists and Kaitlin Hames had two aces, four aces and four digs for the Muckers.

Virgnia City’s junior varsity (7-7) lost 15-25, 21-25.

Dayton falls

SPARKS — Dayton (20-4, 8-2) played up a division at Reed at fell 14-25, 17-25, 20-25. “I expected a lot more from my team going into it,” said Dayton coach Monica Halverson, who added her team struggled in its serving.

Douglas sweeps Wooster

RENO — The Tigers rebounded nicely from their loss at Carson by sweeping Wooster 25-9, 25-15 and 25-20 Thursday night.

Talyn Jackson and Isabelle Peterson led the hitters with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Peterson was the top server with two aces and she led at the net with six blocks. Raychel Allen led the team in digs with 15, while Johnnie Saletti added nine and Peterson eight. Jackson had 18 assists and Maddi Rozier added 13.
