General Sheridan’s reception in Virginia. Virginia put its best foot foremost today in honor of the arrival of General Phil Sheridan. Nearly every building on C Street burst into a rash of red, white and blue, giving the ordinary sober-hued thoroughfare a festive appearance, which greatly impressed the regular inhabitants if it didn’t stun the little general who has, so to speak, been living under triumphant arches, breathing bouquets and wearing out the seat of his trousers at banquets.

The fair, which has just closed at Reno, ought to mark an epoch in the history of the state. It has demonstrated to everybody that we have a bigger and better state than we had heretofore paid but very little attention.

It may be interesting that the latest aspirant for heavy-weight honors is William Pierini, 22, from Dayton. Pierini assumed the name of Bill Sloane. “Bill Sloane, a six-foot-two giant from the wilds of Nevada, has knocked out all comers and will arrive shortly in New York City, ready to try his wallop on the eastern stock of heavyweights.”

70 years ago

Carson Street, through the main part of the city, will be floodlighted from the night of Saturday, the 27th, until after Nevada Day, according to plans being worked out by the subcommittee headed by Mayor George Lind. The lights will be mounted on Carson Street buildings to illuminate fully that part of the city where most visitors are likely to congregate.

Sen. Paul Laxalt, R-Nev., returned Thursday form the Philippines, where he met with President Ferdinand Marcos. Laxalt made the trip at the personal request of President Reagan.
