Horse thieves caught. About 10 days ago, some horses and mules, seven animals in all, were stolen from the Five Mile House, north of this city, and the matter of their recovery placed in the hands of Detective Lackey and Constables Baldwin and Smith. Two persons were arrested in Austin a day or two ago, and last evening Ben Lackey departed for Battle Mountain, there to meet the sheriff of Lander County and escort the prisoners to this city (Virginia Chronicle).

One evening last week, Miss Lillian Smith, who is now without doubt the champion rifle-shot of the world, gave an exhibition at Armory Hall. She is now in her 15th year, and her appearance does not indicate a more mature age. The reporter went out into the back yard and at 20 paces held up a dime, which at Miss Smith knocked out. He held up four more with a similar result.

The first consignment of 10 blooded horses from Europe, purchased by M.P. Guilliams, representing Mr. Wingfield in London, arrived in New York City yesterday and will be shipped direct from that place to the Pleasanton stock farm.

Front pages of the Carson City News of 1909 displayed in Berger’s windows, recall events of days long gone. One page is an extra, announcing a holdup of Dick’s place, which apparently was a highly important spot in those days.

The Appeal bicycle race now turns into the home stretch with Bill Glaser and Mike Lott leading the pack with 60,000 and 58,000 points, respectively. The winner will get either Stingray or Typhoon bicycle, with the second place winner receiving a $25 savings bond.

Death Row inmate Jimmy Neuschafer has been turned down in a District Court appeal of his murder conviction less than two weeks before he was scheduled to die by lethal injection for the August 1981 murder of Willard Taylor.
Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
