World champion Sage Donnelly has been nomimated for the World Paddle Awards Sports Junior of the Year for the second straight year and the public can help her make it to the final round.
The 15-year-old Donnelly from Carson City won the title in the International Canoe Federation Junior Women’s Freestyle Kayak World Championships last month at Ottawa River, Canada.
The World Paddler Awards involve social media voting — which counts for 50 percent — as well as a panel of top paddling judges, which counts for the other 50 percent. Last year, Donnelly finished second to last in social media voting, but made it to the top three with the judges panel even without winning an international title.

Members of Facebook, Twitter and Google + can vote through liking Donnelly by clicking on all those social media icons. Those who aren’t on social media can also like Donnelly by clicking on the big thumb to the right. Those voting can use all four methods, which counts as four votes for Donnelly.
Senator youth football team falls
The Sparks Ducks knocked off the Carson Senators, 19-14, last weekend in a Pop Warner game.
The playoffs start this weekend, as Carson hosts Hawthorne at 8 p.m. Friday.
Carson’s scores came on a 62-yard run by Eduardo Orozco and a TD pass from Joz Foster to Decarlo Quintana. Orozco rushed for 92 yards and Alex Myrehn had 43. Christian Smith, Frank Gomez and Keagan Ferris led the blockers on the offensive line.
Tom Bradley and Robert Henn led the tacklers with eight and five, respectively. Quentin Beck had an interception and fumble recovery and Quintana had an interception. Jacob Hansen and Jon Ammerman had had fumble recoveries.
Sparman wins at
Carson Valley
Jack Sparman beat David Morris via a tiebreaker to win Flight A at the recent Carson Valley Golf Club Men’s Club tournament on Oct. 25.
Both players shot 71. Roger Hala was third with a 73.
Augie Martinez won the B flight in a tiebreaker over Frank Tisiot. Both shot 69s. Neil Bain was third with a 70. Jim Tavernier won C flight with a 65, six shots ahad of Paul Finan and seven ahead of Jack Zippwald.
Ristine promoted to 8th degree black belt, Grandmaster
Local martial artist Glenn Ristine recently attended the world-famous Muhammad Ali Training Camp located in Deer Lake, Pa., where he was evaluated by Professor George Dillman, 10th degree, along with a board of 9th degree Grandmaster Black Belts. After completing the exam, he was promoted to the rank of 8th degree black belt, Grandmaster.
Glenn has trained in the classical “old Style” martial arts of Ryukyu Kempo and Isshin Ryu karate since 1975 and is the Chief Instructor of Integrated Martial Solutions /Life Protection Skills in Carson City. He’s a recognized Senior Master Instructor in pressure point fighting (Kyusho-jitsu) and the sister art of Tuité-jitsu.
