(Virginia Fire, continued from Wednesday). Thousands of people who retired to their beds on Monday night, satisfied that they had worldly goods enough to secure their comforts for time to come, are today but impecunious beggars upon the soil. We would urge upon our citizens to welcome the destitute and homeless with kind and encouraging words and show them hospitality (continued on Friday).

The Terpsichorean Social Club will give a ball on Friday evening in honor of the admission of Nevada into the sisterhood of states. It is an important anniversary for Nevada, and deserves to be marked by some fitting observance.

100 years ago

A rabid coyote got into Kelsey Brother’s corral last evening and created quite a commotion before it was dispatched. The coyote started after a horse, but Frank Kelsey knocked the mad animal down with a rock. Three dogs attacked the coyote, but were bitten in the fight that ensued. Several shots were fired, taking down the animal. All the dogs affected were killed.

70 years ago

“Lucky Jack” Atkinson was properly initiated last night and shown the sights of Carson City through the wooden bars of the fresh-air hoosegow — and all because of facial foliage that wasn’t there, or at least not quite enough to meet the 1864 specifications. The Dice Club owner got a ride in the Red Maria.

50 years ago

A ferry service will be launched on Lake Tahoe this winter to shuttle skiers from ski areas at one end of the lake to lifts at the other shore.

30 years ago

A petition to stop the scheduled Nov. 5 execution of Death Row inmate Jimmy Neuschafer is expected to be filed nearly next week.
