SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: We’re 151 years old and we look great

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: Saturday, Nevada celebrated its 151st birthday, so all of us Nevadans are receiving Silver Dollar for the pride we show in our state. No other state honors its birthday like Nevada does, so we recognize ourselves for honoring our historical heritage in a way no other state does. And we do it every year. And for someone who’s now 151, we must say about ourselves, we still don’t look half bad. Saturday was another great day in downtown Carson City.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Dayton High football team for sticking it out during a trying season in which it finally scored for the first time in its season finale against Fernley. Lacking in numbers, most programs in Dayton’s situation would have folded mid-season. But Dayton’s players and coaches stuck it out and for that they should be commended. Yes, as Herman Edwards so famously once said, “You play to win the game,” but that wasn’t ever a realistic option for the Dust Devils, so all that mattered is that they did play the game.
