Prep roundup: Van Rensselaer, Delgado lead Carson High runners

Ian Van Rensselaer and Eveline Delgado both had top 15 finishes to lead the Carson boys and girls cross country teams at Friday’s Twilight Meet in Sparks.

Both Carson’s boys and girls teams finished 11th in the large schools division in the meet that featured more than 1,000 runners in all divisions. Van Rensselaer covered the 2.48-mile course in 14 minutes, 9 seconds.

Also for Carson’s boys, Hector Gomez finished 50th in 15:01, Miles Bean took 64th in 15:20 and freshman Brandon Copeland was 68th in 15:28. “Overall about the same performance as the last week,” said Carson coach Pete Sinnott, comparing his team’s effort to the season-opening Douglas Class meet.

Delgado took 14th for Carson girls, finishing in 16:42. Also for CHS, Blanca Sosa took 42nd in 17:47, Josefina Ortiz-Osty placed 44th in 17;49 and Athena Favero was 52nd in 18:05.

Sinnott said his girls team turned in a litte stronger performance from the week before at Douglas.

Dayton boys second

Three Dayton runners finished in the top 20 to lead the Dust Devils to a second place finish in the small schools boys race. Brady Huesser ran a consistent race to take 10th, finishing in 14:32. Also for Dayton, Hunter Hatch took 15th in 15:22 and Kobey Workman placed 16th in 15:34. Auston Duarte took 22nd in 15:55 and Madsen Evans placed 34th in 16:36 for the Dust Devils.

“Austin ran a much improved race,” Dayton coach Shawn Anderson said. “He usually is very strong throughout the first half of the race and tires out by the end. He held on and kept a consistent pace throughout the race. I was very proud of him.

Kaeli Barwing finished in 20th in 19:24 for Dayton’s girls

Dayton wins title

Dayton won the title at the North Tahoe Tournament, beating Antelope in three games in the championship match Saturday. Dayton also beat Sierra Lutheran, Antelope, Whittell and Elko to advance to the finals.

Dayton’s junior varsity also won the tournament title, beating Whittell, Sierra Lutheran and Quincy twice, including in the championship match.

“I am so proud of the way that both of the teams went after each win,” Dayton coach Monican Halverson said. “We made mistakes, but we rose to the challenge and worked together to get the win. Varsity has such a strong and talented team this season that I am looking forward to our regular season play.”

Dayton’s varsity improved to 7-1 and will play its home openers against Spring Creek and Elko this Friday and Saturday. “The energy in the gym will be awesome,” Halverson said.

Yerington 3-0

Yerington (11-1) went 3-0 on the first day of the Sierra High Invitational Friday, beating El Capitan 25-19, 23-25, 15-11, Wooster 25-14, 25-21 and Woodcreek 25-19, 25-18.

Against El Capitan, Kassidy Lommori had 16 kills, Ashley Rife had 16 assists and Deseree Landa added eight digs.

Against Wooster, Lommori had nine kills, Landa had 14 digs and Rife added 10 assists. Against Woodcreek, Lommori had nine kills and 12 digs, Landa had 12 digs and Rife added 11 assists.
