Prep roundup: Carson’s defense shuts down Reed, 2-0

Isabella Wakeling and Lauren Hudak scored a goal apiece to lead Carson to a 2-0 win over Reed in a Division I crossover girls soccer match Tuesday night at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

The win gives Carson a 2-0 record heading into Saturday’s 11 a.m. showdown at Spanish Springs.

Carson stretched its shutout streak to two games. The Senators have outscored their opponents, 8-0.

“We played well tonight,” Carson coach Greg Lehman said.

“We moved the ball well, and I was able to see a lot. We were communicating better and getting organized earlier.”

Lindy Lehman, Andrea Maffei, Valerie Sue Meyer, Makaela Bigley and Nahim Gutierrez played well according to Lehman.

Carson dominated from the outset, but only had Wakeling’s score from 15 yards out to show for it. Hudak made it 2-0 in the 51st minute when she followed home a shot from Lindy Lehman.

• The Carson JV team, thanks to a goal by Danielle Gomez, defeated Reed 1-0.

TENNIS

Carson boys down Tigers

MINDEN — The Senators won nine of the first 12 sets en route to a 12-6 victory over the rival Tigers.

Taylor Saarem went 2-0, winning 6-0 and 6-1.

Zach Simms and Jayson Artz went 3-0, including a forfeit in the final round. Nico Salm and Danny Dudley also went 3-0. including a forfeit. Stu McElhany and Alek Henricksen went 2-1.

Josh Brown and Dylan Berke each won two sets to lead Douglas.

Douglas tops CHS girls

The Tigers won the first 12 sets on the way to an easy 14-4 victory.

Heather Lamotte and Elise Brady won for the Senators.

Madelyn Landerfelt and Maggie Rich each won twice for DHS.

VOLLEYBALL

Muckers win title

Virginia City won the Tonopah Tournament over the weekend.

VC, 5-0, opened the tournament with a 25-23 and 25-15 win over Tonopah, edged Pahrump Valley, 27-25 and 25-23, knocked off Tonopah 25-15 and 25-20 and then stopped Pahrump again in the finals, 25-16 and 25-20.

Keisi Sequeira had 20 kills and 44 assists and Jordan Seddon had 14 kills.

Tigers sweep N. Valleys

MINDEN — Isabelle Peterson finished with 10 kills, three digs and two blocks to lead Douglas to a 25-9, 25-11 and 25-8 win over North Valleys Tuesday night in a Division I crossover match.

Johnnie Saletti added five kills with Aubrey Caires, Talyn Jackson and Ashley Campagna adding four each. Saletti also added 12 aces. Jackson finishd with 18 aces and Alex Demaranaville had seven digs.

GOLF

Carson golfers fourth

RENO — Led by medalist Jill Beglin’s 83, Carson High finished fourth at the Sierra League Invitational at Wolf Run Golf Club.

Beglin parred the last two holes to win medalist honors.

Douglas won the event with a 373, 21 shots better than Manogue. Wooster was third at 406 followed by Carson 419 and Damonte 487. Galena didn’t field a complete team.

Camryn Aten and Angelika Morrison were at 106 and Elise McLaren rounded out the squad’s scoring with a 124.

“Jill played extremely well on a tough course,” said CHS golf coach Wade Greenlee. “Even though she played sick, Camryn had 48 on the back nine to keep her score respectable. All the girls kept the ball in play and avoided penalty strokes which was necessary on this course.”
