Lamas scores two goals in Senators’ shutout victory

Ernesto Lamas has never been a prolific goal scorer. In fact, he’d never scored a goal in his Carson career until Wednesday night.

Lamas scored two goals in a two-minute span in the second half to spark the Senators to a 4-0 win over Reed in a Division I crossover soccer match at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

Carson improved to 2-0, and heads to Sparks Saturday for a 1 p.m. meeting at Spanish Springs.

Lamas took some good-natured ribbing from coach Mike Alavrez on the lack of a celebration after either of his goals.

Lamas said he was “proud” to score his first-ever goals.

Carson outshot Reno 9-1 in the opening half, but left the field in a scoreless tie.

The Senators put three shots on goal in the first seven minutes of the second half before Lamas broke the tie in the 53rd minute with a shot from 30 yards out.

“I was looking for somebody to pass it to,” Lamas said.

“Somebody told me to shoot so I did.”

Two minutes later, Lamas, off a pass from Brian Llamas, scored to make it 2-0.

“I just saw the shot and took it,” Lamas said.

The Senators weren’t through, however.

In the 57th minute, Rogelio Herrera bombed one in from 25 yards out to make it 3-0, capping the barrage. Three goals in five shots is a percentage any soccer coach would love to have.

“I knew once we got that first goal others would follow,” Alvarez said. “I didn’t expect three in that short amount of time.

“The offense is giving it their all. The first half we had some good looks but just could capitalize. Our communication needs to improve.”

Guillermo Hernandez celebrated his birthday with a goal inside the final two minutes.

Not to be overlooked was the Senators’ defensive efforts.

The back line of Christian Martinez, Peter Garrett, Osvaldo Gomez and Sal Rodriguez potected keeper Efren Ramirez who had to make just one tough save the entire game. Carson hasn’t allowed a goal in two games.

“Our defense has been stellar,” Alvarez said. “The first two games we’ve done a great job.”

• In JV action, Carson improved to 2-0 with a 4-2 win over Reed.

Raul Lopez, Isael Lopez and Ramon Rojas were among the goal scorers.

Douglas 1, McQueen 0

RENO — Javier Vega scored with six minutes left in the first half for Douglas (4-1-1) in its win over McQueen.

Goalie Luke Heinrichs made three saves to post the shutout for the Tigers. Sweeper Koby Hinnant led the defensive effort.

“He played extremely well,” Douglas coach Milko Vasquez said. “He saved us quite a bit.”

Chris McKimmey, Edgard Hernandez and Micah Miller also played well defensively for Douglas.
