Prep roundup: Reno strikes fast, beats Douglas

RENO — Lukas McKenzie bolted 57 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage Friday night to put the Reno Huskies on track to a 46-7 victory at home against Douglas.

After the quick score, which came 20 seconds into the game, quarterback Isaac Terrasas threw three touchdown passes as Reno (2-1 overall) cruised to the non-league win against Douglas (0-3) at Foster Field.

Douglas got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter, aided by a long kick return to the 47. Quarterback Bryce James rolled to his right and threw a 35-yard touchdown strike to wingback Will Williams, who was open on a post pattern as Douglas pulled to 46-7 with 7:15 left to play.

Earlier in thenight. Trevor Tierney provided a spark for Douglas on defense when he intercepted a pass at the goal line with 5:08 left to play in the first quarter. The Tigers turned the ball around and moved into Reno territory, only to lose the ball on downs at the 40.

Terrasas threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Zane Brown and Daniel Jimenez kicked the PAT for a 14-0 lead.

Reno mounted a 72-yard drive that culminated with Terrasas throwing a 35-yard pass to Jimenez, who made an over-the-shoulder catch for the score to make it 21-0 midway through the second quarter.

Devyn Cox capped a 45-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run and Jimenez kicked the PAT to extend the lead to 28-0 with 1:38 remaining before halftime.

Douglas loses in 4

RENO — Despite 10 kills, 14 digs and three blocks by Talyn Jackson, the Tigers dropped a 21-25, 25-20, 18-25 and 17-25 decision to McQueen on Thursday.

Ashley Campagna added nine kills and seven digs, and Isabelle Peterson finished with eight kills, four blocks and 10 digs.

Dayton wins in 4

In its home and league opener, Dayton beat Spring Creek 25-19, 25-12, 21-15, 25-11. Shalia Powell led the team with 26. Leading hitter was freshman Brianda Diaz. She contributed 11 kills, while Hallie Wells, Kassie Strong, Kallie Strong, and Shalia Powell all had three kills each. had 10 digs and an incredible save in game that kept the momentum going for Dayton.

“We struggled with our serving, missing some key serves in all of our games,” Dayton coach Monica Halverson said. “I am so proud of my team for coming back strong after our third game loss to finish strong in the fourth game.”

Carson drubs Panthers

The Senators improved to 2-1 with a 40-6 win over North Valleys.

Kellen McDermott rushed for two scores and threw a TD pass, and Terin Keller tossed a TD pass to Wyatt Rooker. Richard Romero also has a rushing touchdown. Dawson Lamb had a fumble return. The starting defense pitched a shutout, as NV scored against Carson reserves.

BOYS SOCCER

Douglas 4, Reno 0

MINDEN — Javier Vega and Koby Hinnant combined to score four goals for Douglas in its 4-0 victory at home against Reno on Friday. Vega and Hinnant scored in the 18th and 19th minute respectively as Douglas (5-1-1 overall, 2-1 league) took control of the Northern Division I crossover contest against Reno (1-2).

Vega gave the Tigers their lead with a solo effort, and then a minute later, Hinnant scored with an assist from Flavi Lopez. The Tigers extended their lead to 3-0 in the 40th minute on a goal by Hinnant, who also had an assist

Zach Cruse and Micah Miller played well defensively and goalies Crew Kudrna and Luke Heinrichs combined to post the shutout for Douglas.

Dayton ties

Dayton had a strong effort in a 2-2 tie at Spring Creek. “I’m very proud of my team,” Dayton coach Luis Melgarejo said. “They never gave up and played their hearts out, leaving everything on the field.”

Jaime Avila received a pass from Victor Gomez and after beating the defender, blasted the ball into Spring Creek’s goal. Gabriel Dums defended Dayton’s net to preserve a 1-0 haftime lead.

Victor Gomez scored from outside the box on Jaime Avila’s assist for Dayton’s second goal. Dayton’s defenders Jorddy Diaz, Jonathan Torres and Carlos Landa held the Spartans scoreless until the final 20 minutes. Spring Creek scored with 20 minutes left and then 10 minutes later score after a questionable penalty was called on Dayton to force the tie.

BASEBALL

WNC home openers

Western Nevada College will play its fall season exhibition home opening games in a doubleheader today at John L. Harvey Field. Matt Young will start on the mound when the the Wildcats host Feather River at 10 a.m. WNC will then host 2015 California State runner-up Delta at 3:30.

On Friday, WNC opened its fall season, losing to Yuba 4-2 and tying Shasta 2-2. Abe Yagi went 2-for-4 on the day and Kyle Thompson didn’t allow a hit in pitching two scoreless innings for the Wildcats.

CROSS COUNTRY

Dayton eighth

Dayton came in eighth out of 16 teams and 200 runners at the North Tahoe Invitational. Dayton scorers were Brady Heusser in 31st place (23:11), Hunter Hatch in 37th place (23:27), Kobey Workman in 45th place (24:04), Austin Duarte in 87th place (25:49) and Madsen Evans in 90th place (25:51). Jason Logan (94th place, 26:04) and Jared Logan (26:15, 100th place) also competed for Dayton in the 3.7-mile race.

“They are very consistent runners but we still have our work cut out for us because four of the schools that finished ahead of us are in our division,” Dayton coach Shawn Anderson said. “However, we are still early in the season. A lot can happen between now and November.”

Also for Dayton, Matt Fowler finished the sophomore 3.2-mile race in 12th in 22:29 to earn a medal.
