Local roundup: Hug’s own ‘Shayne’ helps Hawks win shootout vs. Douglas

RENO — Shayne Davis rushed for 163 yards and four touchdowns then broke up three straight passes near the goal line inside the final 10 seconds as Hug held on for a 40-35 win against Douglas on Friday night.

Davis scored on 19-yard runs on back-to-back possessions in the fourth quarter as Hug (1-2) turned a 29-26 deficit into a 40-29 advantage during a non-league contest at Rollins Stallworth Stadium.

Douglas (0-4) rallied late as Taran Grove caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Bryce James with 1:00 left to play to make it 40-35.

Cody Ball recovered the ensuing onside kick for Douglas and the Tigers moved to the 23 before they ran out of downs.

Douglas tailback Sam Melhus rushed for 120 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns for Douglas.

Ja’lawnie Thomas added 124 rushing yards for the Hawks, who turned the ball over four times in the first half. Thomas had a big 58-yard run to set up Davis’ touchdown run that gave the Hawks a 33-29 lead with 10:29 left to play.

CROSS COUNTRY

Carson strong

The Carson boys and girls cross country teams had strong efforts in the Sierra League meet at Bartley Ranch Regional Park in South Reno. Complete results still weren’t available at press time, but Ian Van Rensselaer won the boys race to lead Carson to a fourth place finish.

Carson’s girls had an outstanding effort, finishing second with Eveline Delgado leading the way with a fifth place finish. Carson coach Pete Sinnott said his top four girls Delgado, Josefina Ortiz-Osty, Blanca Sosa and Athena Favero were the top four runners of any team in the meet. “The girls have had big improvements,” Sinnott said.

Dayton wins

Dayton’s boys won their own meet against eight other teams in a race that featured 75 runners on a 5K course.

Dayton’s front runners were Brady Heusser in third place (19:01) followed by Hunter Hatch in fourth place (19:13). “Every week, Hunter is getting a little bit closer to Brady,” Dayton coach Shawn Anderson said. “It will be fun to see how it shakes out as the season progresses.

Kobey Workman took 11th place (19:59) for Dayton.

The gap is pretty big between Kobey and Hunter, but Kobey is a strong runner,” Anderson said. “He will get closer and he’s only a freshman.

Jared Logan had a break out race for the Dust Devils, finishing in 21st in 20:44. Austin Duarte rounded out Dayton’s scoring runners, taking 24th in 20:58. Also for the Dust Devils, Madsen Evans took 26th in 21:04 and Jason Logan placed 27th in 21:05.

Kaeli Barwig finished the girls race in 16th place out of 36 runners in 25:18 for Dayton.

VOLLEYBALL

Dayton sweeps

Dayton swept Fernley to improve to 15-1 and 3-0 in league. Shalia Powell helped pave the way with her setting and dumps over the net. Dayton coach Monica Halverson said her team does need to improve its serving.

Halverson also praised the play of Kallie and Kassie Strong, Hailey Wells and Brianda Diaz and the play of her bench. “Our communication is getting better each game and the girls that are on the court are helping one another play as hard as they can. I really like the teamwork and fight that we have and that with each game we find strength in our teammates and rely on each other to win games. I coach a very dedicated and hardworking group of ladies.”

Yerington wins

Yerington completed a miracle comeback in the fourth game, overcoming an 18-7 deficit to beat Incline 23-25, 25-12, 25-11, 25-23. Kassidy Lommori had 20 kills and 11 digs, Ashley Rife had 18 assists, six aces and five kills, Rachel Dane had nine assists and Deseree Landa added six digs for the Lions.

BASEBALL

WNC wins two

Western Nevada College won two games, beating Yuba 7-2 and Folsom Lake 4-2 in Folsom, Calif.

Kyle Thompson pitched two scoreless innings in relief to pick up the save against Folsom and Blake Morin had three RBI.

WNC will continue its fall exhibition schedule when it hosts two games today at John L. Harvey Field. The Wildcats will host Feather River at 10 a.m. and the Reno Astros at 4 p.m.
