Greening meeting for Carson City’s William Street

City government is hosting two public meetings next week on design options for a Greening America’s Capitals program involving Carson City’s William Street.

Called Greening William Street by the city government, the project is funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for commission of design options on the street, which also is the U.S. Highway 50 corridor into the city. Designs are to improve pedestrian and bicycle facilities, include green infrastructure that reduces stormwater runoff or localized flooding, upgrade water quality and improve the general appearance of the commercial corridor.

The EPA hired Community Design Architecture to conduct the public meetings, which will include presentations during open house sessions, and to work with city government on project designs, according to a news release issued by Community Development Director Lee Plemel. The meetings are set for Monday at 5:30 p.m. and Wednesday at noon in the Carson City Communtiy Center’s Sierra Room. The center is at 851 E. William St.

The project’s design focus will include portions of William Street from Carson Street east to about the Interstate 580 freeway. City government hoped to incorporate resulting design concepts as part of a commerical corridor improvement anticipated eventually under the sales tax plan of expenditure adopted last year.

The Board of Supervisors last year increased city sales tax one-eighth of a penny for downtown and business corridor improvements, as well as other capital improvement projects such as the muti-purpose athletic center now under way and the animal services shelter expected to begin soon.
