MINDEN — Quarterback Matt Denn ran 51 yards for a touchdown on Reed’s first play from scrimmage and then threw a 41-yard touchdown pass on the second play to put the Raiders on track to a 67-20 win over Douglas on Friday night.
Reed (5-0) scored seven touchdowns on eight possessions en route to leads of 27-7 after one quarter and 48-13 at halftime during the non-league contest at Keith Roman Field. Denn completed 14 of 18 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns in the first half.
Douglas (0-5) received an offensive spark from quarterback Bryce James, who scored on an 18-yard run late in the first quarter. The Tigers pulled to within 27-13 at the outset of the second quarter when James connected with Cody Ball on a 32-yard catch and run.
Tailback Sam Melhus scored the Tigers’ final touchdown in the fourth quarter. James was 15-for-24 with 182 yards and one interception for the Tigers. The senior also rushed for 62 yards on 10 carries.
Douglas opens Sierra League play next Friday night with its Homecoming game against Bishop Manogue. On the same night, Reed hosts Reno in what shapes up as a key High Desert League contest.
