Nevada Day Treasure Hunt to begin Oct. 5

A recent Nevada Day tradition, the Nevada Day Treasure Hunt, will continue thanks to a changing of the guard, so to speak.

The Olson family of Carson, who organized the hunt, decided to stop coordinating the hunt after last year, but has turned over those duties to the Mahe family.

When the Olson family lived in Oregon, they participated in the Portland Rose Festival Treasure Hunt and when they moved to Carson City, the decided to establish a similar treasure hunt for a commemorative medallion almost 15 years ago.

Carson City’s Mahe family of Patricia, Doug, Jennifer, Miranda and John Smith and Tammy have taken over the duties of the hunt. Jennifer Mahe said

Until the hunt begins in October, hunters can find the hunt on Facebook by searching Nevada Day Treasure Hunt.

Mahe said the hunt will essentially be the same as always. “I think really we’re trying to be somewhat consistent,” she said. “I don’t think there’s going to be mass differences.”

She also said about the clues, there “still historical, Nevada-type clues.”

One change hunters should know about is the pouch that contains the medallion. It’s no longer the tan pouch that’s been used, but a smaller, grayish pouch the same size as the medallion.

The 14th annual Nevada Day Treasure Hunt will be held from Oct. 5 through 23. While technically anyone can participate since clues are posted on the treasure hunt’s website, the hunt is in reality for those in the Northern Nevada area as the medallion is going to be hidden somewhere in Carson, Churchill, Douglas, Lyon, Mineral Storey or Washoe County.

It will not be buried, and no structure will need to be disturbed or climbed to find it. The treasure will be hidden on public property. Hunting should only be done in daylight hours, but you can be sure the most serious hunters will be out from sun up to sundown.

That’s why clues will be placed on the treasure hunt website http://www.nvdaytreasurehunt.com at 4 a.m. daily Monday through Friday. Clues will also be featured in the Nevada Appeal and at nevadaappeal.com daily. Information is also available at the Nevada Day Treasure Hunt’s Facebook page. Those who go to the treasure hunt’s old website, nevadadaytreasurehunt.com, will be automatically taken to the new website.

The first person to find the treasure will receive a $1,000 prize. The prize is forfeited if the treasure isn’t found within 15 clues.

The person who finds the treasure should bring it to the Nevada Appeal, 580 Mallory Way, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Players must be 18 or older to participate.
