Prep roundup: Otto’s goal sparks CHS to win vs. Wooster in soccer

Molly Otto scored in the 69th minute to snap a 1-all tie and spark the Carson High girls soccer team to a 3-1 win over Wooster Tuesday night at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

Carson improved to 8-0 overall and 2-0 against Sierra League teams. Carson hosts Galena Saturday at 11 a.m.

The game was tied at 1 after the first 40 minutes. Hailey Palotas scored Carson’s goal in the 30th minute.

The Senators dominated the action in the second half, but until Otto scored, had nothing to show for it. The closest Carson came to scoring was when Nahim Gutierrez hit the far post on a free kick in the 51st minute.

Otto’s goal was a nice one. She had a spirited battle with a Wooster defender to corral a pass from Alondra Matas. Carson got an own goal in the 78th minute to complete the scoring.

“We had good opportunities,” CHS coach Greg Lehman said. “Wooster was hustling tonight and they played us tough. They challenged us to create opportunities. Haley had a great first goal. Molly fought hard for that ball, and was fortunate enough to get a foot on it.”

Dayton ties Lovelock

DAYTON — Kristina Mason scored with two minutes left in the match to give the Dust Devils a 1-1 tie in a nonleague battle with Lovelock.

Lovelock scored its goal in the 53rd minute.

GIRLS TENNIS

Douglas pounds Reno

MINDEN — A momentum swing to end the first round put Douglas on track to a 14-4 victory over Reno on Tuesday afternoon that clinched the Northern Division I regular season championship.

Kari Coziahr rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win her No. 3 singles set, while the doubles teams of Anne Pomroy-Kayleigh Carlson and Terra Williams-Kaitlyn Smith pulled out closely contested 7-5 wins to put Douglas (10-0) in control of its conference showdown against Reno (9-1).

Reno won the conference and region tournament championships in 2014 thanks to 10-9 wins over Douglas that were decided in tie-breaker rounds.

The Tigers didn’t have to worry about any tie-breaker this time. Coziahr, a sophomore, charged back to defeat Valary Zvyagin 6-4. Meanwhile, the all-senior team of Pomroy-Carlson came from behind to win a back-and-forth 10th game to take the lead en route to a 7-5 win over Kuulei Hunter-Sophia Smith. The Tigers continued on their first-round roll when Williams-Smith rallied from 3-4 and 4-5 deficits to defeat Grace Cooney-Alex Sasse 7-5.

Reno’s lone win in the first round came in a featured No. 1 singles match in which McKenna LeVitt bested Madelyn Landerfelt, 6-1, in a rematch of last year’s region tournament girls singles championship match.

Douglas hosts McQueen to end the regular season on Thursday and will be at home again on Tuesday for the opening round of the regional team tournament.

Carson rolls Panthers

RENO — Shaylin Segurs went 3-0 and Anya Woodbury went 2-0 to spark the Senators to an easy win at North Valleys.

Emma Breeding went 2-1, as half of Carson’s points came in singles. Emily McCaskill and Amanda Schulz went 3-0 in doubles as did Nancy Henricksen and Mikaela Asby.

BOYS TENNIS

Carson breezes to win

Taylor Saarem went 2-0 to lead the Senators to an easy 12-6 win over North Valleys Tuesday afternoon at CHS.

Carson swept the first round, and coach Hal Wilkins subbed liberally after that. Zach Simms and Jayson Artz went 2-0 in doubles. Jared Barnard, Ryan Tomita and Nick Rosen all posted singles wins, and Danny Dudley and Nico Salm won their only doubles match.

VOLLEYBALL

VC sweeps Pyramid

Kelsi Sequeira had eight aces, six kills and 10 assists, and Cheslea Nevin had 11 kills and 11 assists to lead Virginia City past Pyramid 25-13, 25-14 and 25-15 on Tuesday.

VC improved to 11-2 overall and 6-1 in league. The Muckers visit Smith Valley Saturday at 11 a.m.

The VC JV squad won 25-15 and 25-16.

Douglas sweeps Wooster

MINDEN — Taryn Allmet had 10 kills and nine digs to lead Douglas past Wooster, 25-12, 25-11 and 25-13 Tuesday night.

Aubrey Caires had 11 kills, three digs and two blocks, and Talyn Jackson had four kills, a block, 21 assists and six digs.

Isabelle Peterson added seven kills and 11 digs.
