Prep roundup: Carson rebounds, sweeps Colts

RENO — Carson High’s volleyball team bounced back from a loss to Damonte Ranch by sweeping Wooster, 25-17, 25-20 and 25-12 Wednesday night.

Carson improved to 1-1 in Sierra League play and 6-2 overall. The Senators play in the Nike TOC Friday in Phoenix. The Senators play Immaculate Heart of New Jersey at 1:30 p.m., Millenium of Arizona at 3:30 and Desert Vista of Arizona at 5:30.

“Our attitude was much better,” Carson coach Robert Maw said. “The girls played together as a team, and I was happy to see that.”

Maw sat both setter Natalie Anderson and middle Maddie Jergesen in the opening set, and JV call-up Dajarrah Navarro had all three of her kills in the opening set to spark the Senators.

The youngster may have earned another varsity appearance after the team returns from Arizona.

Juliana Anderson played solid, notching 12 kills and 11 digs, and Jaycie Roberts contributed nine kills, two assists and six digs. Kylie Riske had a big hitting night with eight kills in 16 attempts, and Jergesen had six kills, a dig and two blcoks in two sets. Riske also had three blocks.

Dayton sweeps Lovelock

LOVELOCK — Brianda Diaz had 11 kills and 10 digs to spark the Dust Devils to a 25-16, 25-23 and 25-14 win over Lovelock in a nonleague match on Wednesday.

“The girls had a different mindset,” Dayton coach Monica Halverson said. “With Homecoming done, complete focus was back on volleyball. After two days of practice, I think the team figured out what they need to do to win.”

Shalia Powell finished with four kills, nine digs and 22 assists, and Hailey Wells added five kills and five digs.

Makenna Olsen finished with four kills and a block, and Kallie Strong has three kills and two digs.

Dayton is 4-2 in league and 17-3 overall.

• In JV action, Makenzie Montero had three kills and six digs, and Natalia Smith added seven assists and an ace to lead Dayton to a 25-22 and 25-19 victory.

Sierra Lutheran loses

After spotting Sierra Lutheran a one-set lead, Whittell went on to win the next three sets and the match, 9-25, 25-15, 25-10 and 25-12 Tuesday night.

Brynna Hansen had seven kills, two aces, a block and five digs. Grace Bonafede had five kills, while Sidney Johnson and Gabby Kale added three kills each. Kim Eckert had six digs for the Falcons.

Douglas boys fall

RENO — Galena scored both of its goals in the second half on its way to a 2-0 win over Douglas. “They’re probably the best team we’ve come across this year,” Douglas coach Milko Vasquez said. “They’re very quick, very sound, but we didn’t really play very well as a team.”

Vasquez did say Pedro Vega played well at midfield and defenders Niklas Wegner and Micah Miller played well for the Tigers.
