Local roundup: CSN sweeps Wildcats, extends lead to 3 games

HENDERSON — Brody Westmoreland stroked a game-winning two-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning as College of Southern Nevada completed a Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader sweep of Western Nevada College, 4-3, on Friday in Henderson.

Westmoreland and Drew Newson doubled in two runs apiece as CSN built a 9-1 lead in the opener, then hung on for a 9-6 victory.

With the sweep, the Coyotes extended their SWAC lead over second-place WNC to three games. CSN improved to 16-2 in SWAC play, while the Wildcats dropped to 13-5.

WNC starting pitcher Matt Young (4-4) gave up 11 hits and eight earned runs in five innings in the opener. CSN sophomore right-hander A.J. Jones handcuffed the Wildcat offense early and left after 5 1/3 innings. WNC scored five runs on five hits against the undefeated Coyote starter.

Daniel Nist stroked a RBI single, and Jones walked in Chandler Barkdull and Tim Lichty as the Wildcats rallied for four runs in the sixth. Barkdull scored an unearned run in the seventh to complete the scoring.

Bradley Lewis supplied two RBI for WNC.

The Wildcats took a 3-1 lead into the ninth inning of the nightcap.

D.J. Peters scored twice to put WNC on top, 2-1.

He came home on Chad Bell’s walk in the fourth inning to tie the score at 1, then scored on an error in the eighth. Lichty padded WNC’s lead to 3-1 in the eighth when he came home on Justin Mannens’ sacrifice fly.

Wildcat starting pitcher Chase Kaplan six-hit the Coyotes over six innings. He allowed one earned run and fanned two. Josh Mill took the loss — his first in four decisions — surrendering two hits and three earned runs. He struck out five and walked three.

The SWAC’s top two teams will wind up their four-game series with a twin bill beginning at noon today.

VARSITY BASEBALL

Fernley tops Dayton

FERNLEY — The Vaqueros put back-to-back four-run innings together en route to a 10-3 win over Dayton in a Northern Nevada Division 1A game on Friday.

The game was tied at 1 after three, but Fernley quickly took control with two big innings, sending Dayton to its seventh straight loss.

“A seven-game skid wasn’t how we envisioned our season to start,” Dayton coach Mike Burrows said. “The injury bug hit us early, and we’ve been forced to move guys around to compensate. The bottom line is we need to play better defensively and execute on offense. If we can put those together we can be competitive. We had our chances offensively, but couldn’t get the big hits we needed to stay in the game.”

Jacob Nelson drove in two runs and Nick Hein drove in one. Dylan Baker had two hits and scored a run.

Wildcats split twin-bill

Bailey Henderson and Makaylee Jaussi socked two-run doubles and Briauna Carter launched a three-run homer as WNC won the Scenic West Athletic Conference softball series opener with a 10-3 victory at Edmonds Park on Friday afternoon.

In the second game, despite a two-run homer by Kacie Freudenberger the Wildcats’ comeback bid fell short in a 7-6 defeat.

in the second inning of the opener. Henderson’s two-out line drive double to left field plated Triniece Lesky and Jaussi, giving WNC its first lead, 3-2. Mecham’s RBI single to center brought home Henderson, making the score 4-2.

“It was just trying to jump on the first good pitch; I was going to hit anything up in the zone,” Henderson said. “She was a little slower than we’ve been facing and her ball was going down a little bit, so moving up in the batter’s box we were able to see if it was dropping or not.”

In the third, the Coyotes pulled within 4-3 on Shonda Badayos’ two-out RBI double to left.

But the Wildcats put together a scoring rally for the third straight inning against Badayos. This time it was Jaussi who stroked a two-run double into the left-center field gap. Lesky and Gabrielle Canibeyaz scored on the play as WNC increased its advantage to 6-3. Henderson knocked in her third run of the opener with a single in the fifth, expanding WNC’s lead to four runs.

Lesky scored for the third time on the hit. Carter removed any late-inning suspense by belting a three-run homer to left-center field in sixth.

In the second game, the Coyotes scored first again. CSN took advantage of a dropped fly ball, two walks and an RBI single by Chandie Perez to push three runs across the plate.

WNC had an answer in the bottom of the first. Freudenberger crushed a Jaycie LeBaron pitch well over the center-field fence for a two-run homer. But the Coyotes used a long ball by Anysa Calderson in the second to move in front 4-2. Lesky’s two-out liner over the left fielder’s head for two bases sent Canibeyaz home with the Wildcats’ third run.

The Wildcats went ahead 5-4, but Southern Nevada nicked reliever McKell Marble for two runs and a 6-5 lead.

The teams conclude their four-game series with a noon doubleheader at Edmonds.

VARSITY SOFTBALL

Fernley blanks Dayton

FERNLEY — Courtney Dunn struck out 10 in no-hitting the Dust Devils on Friday afternoon.

The game was stopped after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Dunn helped herself with two RBI and Alexandria Conder also drove in two runs.

Ply 5th in hurdles

SPARKS — J.J. Ply ran a 42.93 to take fifth place in the 300-meter hurdles Friday night at the Reed Sparks Rotary Invitational.

Carson only sent its girls throwers, and Amanda Schulz was 15th in the shot put with a throw of 28-5 3/4.

In frosh-soph action, Dayton’s Jeffery Walker was seventh in the pole vault at 9-feet and took 12th in the 300 hurdles (45.32). Dayton’s David Delfin was 11th in the discus at 99 feet. Carson’s Blaise Bonomo was 13th in the discus at 97-1.
