Senator Square: Scott Vickrey is Carson High School Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to Scott Vickrey, the 2016 Carson High School Teacher of the Year, and Tami Burgoon, the Carson High School Classified Employee of the Year for 2016. Becoming Teacher of the Year is no easy task at CHS. With 104 teachers, not including other staff members, the Teacher of the Year award is an accomplishment most teachers never receive, so winning an award like this requires a great many people to say a great thing or two about Scott Vickrey.

Vickrey, an Arizona State University graduate, is not only a biology teacher at CHS, but he’s the head of his department as well. He loves hiking, climbing, hunting, fishing, and just about any activity done outdoors and, whether others like it or not, is a fan of the Oakland Athletics. Vickrey’s been married to his wife for 30 years this May and has a son Brandon, who is a CHS and University of Nevada, Reno, graduate. There are so many amazing teachers within the Carson City School District, and Scott Vickrey is one who devotes himself to personal discipline, passion, creativity, heart, and the loving sacrifice of time and effort to help CHS students succeed in their future endeavors. For the past 17 years Vickrey has been a CHS Senators biology teacher and Senators’ girls’ softball coach, not to mention the myriad other responsibilities he has at the high school. Scott Vickrey has influenced thousands of students to never settle for status quo but to pursue their desires to become all they can be for their betterment and the enhancement of others. According to Elise Brady, a junior and varsity softball player at CHS, “Vickrey is a very fun-loving and dedicated coach; he can be serious when he has to be, but at the same time he knows how to relate to the girls on the team.”

SENIOR PROJECT JUDGES NEEDED

Seniors are finishing their senior projects, yet the Senior Project Committee is still in desperate need of community judges for April 18. Judges are needed for the 8 and 10 a.m. and noon time slots. CHS FATHER-DAUGHTER DANCE

The 2nd annual Father-Daughter Dance is being held from 6 to 9 p.m. April 8 at CHS. This year’s theme is “Once Upon a Time Enchanted Forest Ball.” Any and all ages of father-daughters are welcome to attend. Purchase tickets at the CHS front office from 2 to 4 p.m. each day. Tickets are $30 per father/daughter couple and $10 for each additional daughter. Light desserts and snacks will be served. Funds raised at this event support CHS Culinary, Leadership, FBLA & SkillsUSA.

NATIONAL CREDIT UNION YOUTH MONTH

April is NCU Youth Month, and Greater Nevada Credit Union Branch at CHS is sponsoring a drawing for a $200 gift card in celebration. The contest begins April 4 and ends April 29, and all CHS students may enter. In addition, all CHS students may take advantage of a free $10 Gift of Membership to open a savings account at GNCU, and all CHS students who make a deposit to their account in April will receive a free gift. Entry forms and contest rules are available at the GNCU Education branch at CHS between 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

WESTERN NEVADA COLLEGE OFFER

Like working with the hands at building stuff? Like fixing cars? Want to work for a company like Tesla? WNC is offering programs through the Jump Start CTE program in Construction, Automotive Repair, Auto Body, and Automated Industrial Technology to earn 24 college credits. Cost is minimal, and the classes will earn nationally recognized certifications that employers recognize! Questions? Students, go to Room 104 to sign up for success.

Graduation is just around the corner, so parents and students, don’t be left wondering what to do next.

SAFE GRAD

Attention all parents, graduation is just around the corner, and Safe Grad, an all-night party for graduating seniors of CHS, is coming soon. The party is held at the Carson City Community Center and is filled with games, music, dancing, hypnotists, raffle prizes, and all-you-can-eat food followed by an optional trip to Six Flags Amusement Park in Vallejo, Calif.
