CHS dusts off Reno to cap sweep

RENO — Carson High’s baseball team sent a message to the rest of the Northern Division I teams Thursday night at Zunini Field.

The Senators, thanks to the pitching of Bryce Moyle and the hitting of Kyle Krebs and Jesse Lopez, knocked off perennial powerhouse Reno, 4-2, to record a series sweep and improve to 6-2 in league play.

“Yeah we did (send a message),” said Krebs, whose two-run homer in the third proved to be the game-winning hit. “We got swept by Reed and we don’t like to lose. A lot of teams are going to take notice. Not many teams beat Reno at home, and not many teams sweep Reno.”

“It was a good win,” CHS coach Bryan Manoukian said. ”I feel good about this win. We have a lot of work in front of us. We made a couple of errors and we didn’t bunt very well. Fortunately Bryce pitched an awesome game, Kyle stepped up and got a big hit, and Jesse came up with a single to give us an insurance run.”

It was a big win, but Manoukian knows there’s still a bunch of baseball left to play, 14 games in fact. A lot can happen between now and then.

Both teams scored a run in the first without the benefit of a hit.

The Senators used walks to Connor Pradere amd Krebs plus a sacrifice fly by John Holton for their run. The Huskies used errors by Abel Carter and Jace Keema for an unearned run.

Lopez, the hero of Tuesday’s win, singled to start the third. However, he was promptly picked off by Austin Whan. Pradere beat out a bunt, and after Cody Azevedo lined out to third, Krebs hit the first pitch he saw for a two-run homer and a 3-1 lead.

“He (coach Pete Savage) pitched me backwards on Tuesday,” Krebs said. “I was sitting on the curve ball. I got under it, but enough to hit it out. He just left it up.”

Reno cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the inning when Kaden Hogan was hit by a 1-2 curveball and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Hayes Riedeman.

That would be it for the Reno offense, as Moyle allowed four hits the rest of the way, though there were some tense moments.

Reno loaded the bases with one out in the fourth, but Moyle induced Hogan to hit into an inning-ending double play.

Moyle said that was the turning point for him. He was tough to hit the last three innings because his off-speed stuff really gave the Huskies problems.

“I got on a roll after the double play,” Moyle said. “I didn’t have my off-speed pitch in the bullpen or the first couple of innings. When I was in the dugout I was thinking about what I needed to do. I went out there and worked on it one inning, and found it.”

Indeed. He caught Kurtis Roberts looking at an off-speed third strike to end the fifth, and he got Whan and Nick Clayton on called thirds in the sixth. He finished with eight strikeouts and two walks in his 117-pitch effort. “It was definitely a big game for Bryce,” Manoukian said. “He settled down and got stronger as the game went along which he always does.”

The road doesn’t get any easier for the Senators, who host Manogue on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the first of a two-game series. Jared Barnard gets the start for Carson.

McQueen pounds Carson

RENO — The Lancers scored five in the first and five in the fifth en route to an easy 15-5 win over the Senators. The game was called in the sixth after a Bayley Miller homer made it a mercy rule game.

The Senators played without coach Shane Quilling, who missed the game to attend a funeral, and Jailene Salciedo, who was hit on her throwing hand by a line drive.

Carson made five errors which contributed to eight unearned runs against Lauren Lemburg.

The Lancers led 7-0 after two, but Carson scored twice in the third on a two-run double by Camiell Simpson. McQueen matched the two-run output in the bottom of the third to make it 9-2. Carson scored three on singles by Bailey Allen, Nicole Brown and Gabbi Winder plus a double by Lemburg, who enjoyed a 4-for-4 day at the plate.

The Lancers put it out of reach with five in the fifth.

Nobody other than Lemburg had more than one hit.

Carson visits North Valleys for an 11 a.m. doubleheader on Saturday.

JV BASEBALL

Reno rallies for win

RENO — The Huskies overcame a 3-1 deficit to beat Carson, 8-3, Thursday in Reno.

Kyle Glanzmann, Colby Zemp, Kahle Good and Terin Keller had a hit apiece, Good drove in two runs.

Dayton tournament set

A benefit golf tournament for the Dayton High baseball and softball teams is set for April 17 at 9 a.m. at Dayton Valley Golf Club.
