Prep roundup: Hawley and Pradere shine in track

RENO — Zach Hawley of Dayton won both the shot put and discus at Saturday’s Northwest Invitational at McQueen High School.

Hawley won the shot with a throw 58-8 and the discus with a toss of 168-6. Both were meet records. He accounted for all of Dayton’s 20 team points. The Dust Devils finished 13th.

Carson was ninth in the boys competition thanks to the efforts of Chris Miranda, Hector Gomez-Barrios,Ian Van Rensselaer, Dylan Mayo and a couple of relay teams.

The 1600 relay squad was third in 3:32.99 and the 3200 relay squad was fourth in 8:17.56.

Chris Miranda had a PR in the discus at 151-9 to take fifth and he was seventh in the shot at 46-feet. Barrios was fifth in the 400 at 51.38 while Van Rensselaer was fifth in the 800 at 2:01. Mayo was fifth in the long jump at 19-8, seventh in the triple jump at 40-4 and 11th in the 110 high hurdles at 17.85.

On the girls side, Athena Favero was second in the 300 hurdles (46.47), fifth in the 200 (26.82) and sixth in the 100 hurdles (17.24). Abby Paulson was third in the triple jump at 33-2. Freshman Ashley Britt was eighth in the 100 hurdles (17.67) and 10th in the 300 hurdles (51.60). Blanca Sosa was eighth in the 800 (2:30.36) and Erica Basa was 10th in the triple jump (30-3).

Zaria Landis of Dayton was 10th in the 1500 (5:22.06) and 13th in the 800 (2:37.14) and Grace Wells was 11th in the 400 (65.70).

“Athena and Ian had big days,” said Sean Lehmann, CHS assistant coach. “Ian qualified for the Meet of Champions. Chris Miranda also threw well. We had a lot of PRs.”

• Abigail Pradere, running at the Mt. Sac Relays in Southern California, continues to run well. She ran a 2:13.68 to finish fifth in her heat and it was a season-best time by more than five seconds. Teammate Greg Wallace was fourth in the high jump at 6-4, tying his season best. Ian Schulz threw the shot 54-6 1/2 and placed ninth in the discus with a throw of 162 feet. Asa Carter was fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 46-1.

VARSITY SOFTBALL

Carson gets split

SACRAMENTO — The Senators finished the Sacramento tournament with a 1-3 record after earning a split on Saturday.

Carson opened the day with a 10-2 loss to Monterey Trail, but bounced back to beat Laguna Creek, 3-2, in its final game.

The game against Monterey Trail was close until the fifth when the Senators gave up six runs in the top of the fifth.

Carson scored once in the third when Lauren Lemburg stole home and added one in the fifth on singles by Kassidy Cooley and Camiell Simpson.

Faith Bigelow had two hits in the loss.

Against Laguna Creek, Carson led 3-1 after four innings.

Carson scored twice in the third on singles by Bailey Allen, Simpson, Bigelow and Gabbi Winder. The Senators made it 3-1 in the fourth on a single by Elise Brady and a sacrifice fly by Allen. Laguna scored one in the sixth, but Lemburg got out of the jam without any further damage. The game was stopped after six innings because of time limit. Brady had two hits for CHS.

“The first game was horrible,” coach Shane Quilling said. “It might have been our worst of the year. We came out very flat. We didn’t do anything right it seems.

“We played pretty well the second game. Lauren pitched well and we didn’t make any mistakes.”

Douglas splits

RENO — Douglas bounced back from a tough opening-game loss to take game two from the Reno Huskies 8-1 and salvage a split of the doubleheader.

In game one, Reno (11-5 overall, 9-3 league) scored three runs in the sixth inning and then broke a 4-4 tie with the walk-off winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

Douglas (10-11-1 overall, 6-6 league) came back in the second game to score twice in the first inning and added two more runs in the third to go up, 4-0. The Tigers pulled away with four runs in the fifth inning.

VARSITY BASEBALL

Reed edges Douglas

RENO — Parker Houston’s walk-off single lifted the Reed Raiders to a come-from-behind 5-4 Northern Division I baseball victory against Douglas Saturday afternoon at Greater Nevada Field.

Houston, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound senior who has signed to play football at San Diego State, went 3-for-3 with two RBI to lead Reed (15-4 overall, 8-4 league) offensively. Beard helped his own cause at the plate by hitting 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI.

Douglas (7-14 overall, 3-9 league) led 4-3 before the Raiders rallied to tie the score in the fifth inning and then win the game in the seventh.

Douglas took a 2-1 lead in the first inning and added two more runs in the third to extend its lead to 4-1.

Haydn Brown hit 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI while Isaiah Schat went 1-for-3 with three RBI to lead the Tigers offensively.

Austin Beard pitched a complete game six-hitter to pick up the win. The Tigers had collected 16 hits on Thursday in their 12-8 win at home against Reed.

SWIMMING

Carson girls win 2

Carson High knocked off Galena 152-142 and Reed 197-80 in a double dual at the Carson Aquatic Facility on Saturday. The Senators had just one overall individual event winner.

Nicole Van Geel won the 100 free in 59.04 and was second in the 50 free in 26.90. Morgan Nelson was second overall in the 100 breaststroke (1:24.71) and third overall in the 100 free (1:01.62), and America Brena Gutierrez was second overall in the 500 free (5:53.30). Camryn Aten was second overall in the 200 free (2:16.45) while Cristna Saenz was second overall in the 100 back (1:13.30) and fourth overall in the 100 fly (1:10.26). Ashley Meyer was third overall in the 500 free (6:07.29) and third overall in the 100 back (1:14.86). Christy Krahn was third overall in the 200 IM (2:29.74).

The Carson boys beat Reed 156-74 and lost to Galena 141-124.

Dagen Kipling won the 500 free (5:09.16) and the 100 breaststroke (1:05.18). Alex Gutierrez won the 100 back (1:01.14) and was second overall in the 200 free (2:04.62). Reece Canfield won the 100 fly (56.85) and took second overall in the 100 free (54.76). Matthew Hill was second overall in the 100 back (1:02.36) and Brett Kolb was third overall in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.40) and fourth in the 500 free (5:20.23). Dylan Popoff was fourth overall in the 50 free (27.04) and Bryan Remick was fourth overall in the 200 IM (2:19.34).

JV BASEBALL

Cougars pummel Carson

SPARKS — The Cougars scored eight runs in the second and went on to an 18-10 win over the Senators Saturday afternoon.

Ethan Good, Kahle Good, Landon Truesdale and Dan Morrison all had three hits for Carson. Kahle Good knocked in three runs while Ethan Good and Joe Tonino (2-for-4) had two RBI apiece.
