In Jail. Hughes, the soldier who killed a sergeant belonging to his regiment about a year ago, has by order of the Lieutenant Col. Hooker, commanding the District of Nevada, been turned over to the civil authorities for trial, and he was yesterday brought here from Fort Churchill and lodged in the Ormsby County Jail.

At half past two yesterday the whistle of the steam laundry gave forth a long, loud blast that echoed all over the hills and caused the Chinese laundrymen to jump two feet in the air all over town. Harry Millard, the proprietor of the other steam laundry, was allowed to pull the cord and show his good will.

Fifty representative citizens of Gardnerville and the Reno Commercial Club have petitioned the Nevada Railroad Commission to have the motor train leave Reno on its return trip to Carson City, Minden and Gardnerville at 3 p.m. instead of 1 p.m.

President Truman endorsed as a wonderful idea a proposal to have this country go on a drastically restricted diet for two days a week in order to help starving people of the world survive.

A spectacular six-foot, four-inch jump by Noel Waters and an excellent 4:42.8 mile by Mike Bell led Carson City high school to a record-breaking victory in the Carson relays here yesterday.
