RANGELY, Colo. — Western Nevada College softball rode strong pitching performances by Kristina George and Kaitlyn Jimmy to a Scenic West doubleheader sweep of Colorado Northwestern, 6-0 and 3-2, Friday afternoon.
In the opener, George fanned five and allowed just five hits in tossing a complete-game shutout. Jimmy started the second game, going 4.1 innings before giving way to George, who allowed two unearned runs and two hits in 2.2 innings.
“She’s getting more and more comfortable in the circle and there is a great dynamic between her and (catcher) Bailey (Henderson),” said WNC coach Leah Wentworth about George. “We charted their hitters last time and she felt really confident what she could do, then dominated their offense.”
The teams conclude the series with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. today.
WNC scored an unearned run in the first on a walk and one-out error, and then added four more unearned runs in the third and one in the fourth.
In the third, Colorado made two errors and Kaylee Jaussi, Briauna Carter and Noa Talia all doubled. Bailey Henderson singled in WNC’s final run in the fourth.
Colorado had one runner reach second in the second and runners reach second and third in the fifth. In both instances, George came through and shut the rallies down.
Jaussi led WNC with two hits.
In the nightcap, WNC trailed 2-1 entering the sixth.
Carter and Noa reached base and scored on a double by Gabby Canibeyaz to make it 3-2.
WNC led 1-0 when Jaussi singled and eventually scored on a single by Kacie Freudenberger’s single.
Colorado Northwestern scored one in the third and one in the fifth.
Noa went 3-for-3 for WNC. Colorado Northwestern got extra-base hits from Taylor Reidhead and Ashton Bell.
CNCC dropped to 7-20 in the SWAC and 11-22 overall.
WNC improved to 11-19 and 16-25 overall.
JV TRACK
Teams will finish meet today
Ashley Britt won two events to lead Carson Friday at the Carson JV Invitational.
The throwing events, high jump and pole vault were not contested. They will be contested today starting at 9 a.m. prior to the varsity meet.
Britt won the 100 hurdles in 18.73 and the 300 hurdles in 52.56. By winning her events, she will be in the varsity events today.
Jiavanna Wongfortunato won the 3200 in 14:53.10. Lauren Roby was second in the 100 (14.38) and 200 (31.15). Scarlet Baez was third in the 1600 (6:35.23) and third in the 800 (3:00.47). Chloe Hataway was second in the 3200 (15:12.28).
Dayton’s Grace Wells won the 400 in 63.64. Sierra Lutheran’s Brynna Hansen was second in the 300 hurdles (54.89). Douglas’ Leslee Alaniz won the 1600 (6:14.49).
On the boys side, Ben Granados (200, 24.94), Brandon Copeland (400, 55.56) and Hunter Rauh (1600, 5:09.70) all won individual events. Adan Garcia was second in the 800 (2:26.57). Leonardo Rodriguez was fourth in the long jump (16-7) and fourth in the triple jump (34-7). Cody Main was third in the 100 hurdles (18.40) and Jayson Legott was third in the 3200 (11:40.89).
Douglas’ Samuel King won the 100 (11.32), while Dayton’s Zackary Scott (1600, 5:10.44) and Jeffrey Walker (300 hurdles, 45.32) placed second in their events. Scott was also fourth in the 800 (2:29.95).
Sierra Lutheran’s Craig Moe was third in the triple jump (34-9).
VARSITY BASEBALL
Dayton, Sparks suspended
DAYTON — The Dust Devils and Sparks battled to a 9-9 tie when the game was suspended by the umpires with one out in the top of seventh. Sparks has a runner on with one out.
The teams will attempt to complete the game today at 10 a.m., and then play the regularly scheduled doubleheader.
