Carter sets school record in triple jump

It has been a record-setting season for Carson High senior Asa Carter.

The Senators’ three-sport star soared to a school record in the triple jump with a leap of 48-feet 3-inches Saturday at the Carson High Invitational at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

Carter’s win in the triple jump and fourth-place finish in the high jump helped Carson finish second to Reed in the boys division. The Raiders had 149 and Carson was at 81.5. Douglas was third with 58. Two other area schools, Dayton and Sierra Lutheran, were in sixth (41 points) and 20th (4 points), respectively.

Athena Favero also had a big day with a second in the 300 hurdles (46.94) and third-place finishes in the 200 (26.57) and 100 hurdles (17.51).

Carson’s girls were third with 58 points, well behind Reed (102) and Bishop Manogue (81). Douglas was sixth (50), Sierra Lutheran 12th (25) and Dayton 16th (18).

Carter’s record came on his first jump of the day, and he fully believes he’s capable of a lot more.

“Coach Maw told me if I jumped 48 feet I wouldn’t have to jump again,” Carter said. “I think I’ve been pushing that (mark) for a while. I think I could get 49 feet on a nice day.”

“He came out and popped a monster jump,” Maw said. “It was a great day for him. Dylan (Mayo) also had a big day jumping 43 feet.”

Mayo was fourth in the triple jump at 43-feet and sixth in the 300 hurdles at 43.32. Greg Wallace was second in the high jump at 6-feet-2 and Hector Gomez-Barrios was third in the 400 at 51.40.

Freshman Ashley Britt was sixth in the 100 hurdles (18.25) and third in the 300 hurdles (50.68). Abby Paulson was third in the triple jump (33-10).

Dayton’s Zach Hawley also enjoyed a successful day, winning the shot put (55-2) and discus (162-7). He knocked off Carson’s Ian Schulz in both events. Schulz was second in the shot and a disappointing 12th in the discus.

“In the discus his average is getting better,” Dayton coach Mike Paul said. “He’s been averaging at least two throws in the 160s. The shot put wasn’t what we had hoped for, but it was a good day.”

“I was in a little slump at the start of the year,” Hawley said.

“I was having trouble connecting. I had all the parts, I just wasn’t putting them together. Everybody has an off day, but if I can throw 55 on an off day, I’m pretty happy with that.”

J.J. Ply won the high jump at 6-4 and was third in the hurdles. He no-heighted in the pole vault, however.

Sierra Lutheran’s Grace Bonafede was second in the triple jump at 34-1 1/2 and Rebecca Mason took third in the high jump with an effort of 4-10, a PR for her.
