Fire — bad practice. The Carson Fire Department was called out night before last, or rather, on yesterday morning, by an alarm of fire which was caused by the burning of an old unoccupied barn near the Overland Stage Company’s Stables. The fire had doubtless been set purposely in order to give the firemen a “run.”

The rape case. Justice Gaige held the preliminary examination in the rape case yesterday with closed doors. The testimony will not all permit of publication, but there was enough to show that the defendant enticed four girls into the sagebrush under pretext of picking flowers. He attempted criminal assault on one, and while so engaged was set upon and beaten with sagebrush by the other three.

Professor Regan of the college of agriculture is leaving this week for Washington and Oregon to purchase about 50 head of Holstein-Friesian cows for the state prison farm. A few of these are to be purebred and use for grading up the herd.

Actual construction on a Carson City ball diamond began this week with an area approximately 500 by 700 feet cleared off immediately in front of Lone Mountain cemetery. The Carsonites, sponsored by Johnny Sanford, are entered in the western Nevada Sagebrush League and will play on May 19. Jake Lawlor, University of Nevada baseball coach, said he would help in any way.

The State Gaming Control Board Saturday filed an administrative complaint seeking a permanent order to block the Silver Nugget in North Las Vegas from using semi-topless female blackjack dealers.
