Prep roundup: Douglas baseball stays in playoff hunt

MINDEN — Hunter Simpson’s walk-off single capped a four-run seventh inning that lifted the Douglas baseball team to a key 8-7 Northern Division I win against Wooster Thursday afternoon.

Douglas (11-16 overall, 7-11 league) trailed 6-2 in the sixth inning before rallying for a victory that kept its playoff hopes alive.

The Tigers pulled to within 6-4 when freshman Ayden Murphy drove two runs home on a two-out, two-strike single into center field.

Haden Keller, Tomas Leitenbauer and Spencer Trivitt connected for successive singles to lead off the Tigers’ seventh inning rally. Two runs scored on a throwing error, Logan Fencl drew a bases loaded walk to tie the score 7-all and then Simpson laced a full-count pitch into left-center field to end the game.

Fencl, Keller and Simpson collected two hits each to lead Douglas offensively. Tyler Vetter had two hits for Wooster (8-19, 4-14), which has absorbed eight league losses by three runs or less. Two of those losses have been walk-off decisions.

Douglas overpowers Colts

RENO — Amanda Hoffman pitched a complete game five-hitter with 11 strikeouts and Douglas scored five runs in the fifth inning on its way to a 9-2 win versus Wooster Thursday afternoon.

Douglas (13-12 overall, 9-7 league) was locked in a 1-all deadlock before taking the lead for good in the fifth against Wooster (3-23, 2-14).

Mackenzie Brixey hit 2-for-4 with an RBI triple in the fifth inning, Allison Meyer 2-for-4 with a two-run singlein the sixth and Shaena Robinson 2-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the Tigers offensively. Corryne Diaz and Casey Peck both contributed one double and an RBI, while Kylie Swan drove in one run.

The support was more than enough for Hoffman, who allowed solo runs in the third and sixth innings.

Douglas hosts Damonte Ranch in a key doubleheader Saturday.

McQueen knocks off Carson

Emily Mitchell pitched a four-hitter, and her teammates scored three in the second and four in the fifth to knock off Carson, 9-1, Thursday afternoon.

Kassidy Cooley doubled and singled to lead the Senators, while Elise Brady and Gabbi Winder added a hit apiece.

Other than the fourth when the Senators scored their only run, they never got a runner to second base.

Mitchell was overpowering at times, fanning seven and walking three. The top three hitters in the CHS line-up — Lauren Lemburg (0-for-4), Bailey Allen (0-for-1) and Camiell Simpson (0-for-3) were a combined 0-for-8.

Bayley Miller’s two-run single highlighted the three-run second, sparking the Lancers to a 4-0 lead. Leading 5-1, McQueen added four in the fifth thanks to Haley Stevenson’s two-run double.

WNC home finale

There will be several chances to honor the most successful players in the history of Western Nevada College softball.

The Wildcats will hold their annual team banquet starting at 6 p.m. Saturday at Gold Dust West Casino in Carson City. The public is invited to attend but must reserve a spot as soon as possible by calling assistant coach Sam Herceg at 775-721-9947.

The banquet will include cocktails, a buffet dinner and awards presentations. The cost is $25 per person.

Also on Saturday, Wentworth and assistant coaches Herceg and Bethany Henry-Herman will honor the team’s sophomores between games of a doubleheader against Snow College. The doubleheader begins at noon at Edmonds Sports Complex at Pete Livermore Park.

WNC’s first of four final home games with Snow starts at 1 p.m. today.

JV BASEBALL

Carson edges Damonte

Kahle Good hit a two-run double to drive in Terin Keller and Josh Buchan to cap a three-run sixth inning and give the Carson Senators a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Damonte Ranch Thursday afternoon.

Ethan Good went 2-for-3 and drove in a run, and Landon Truesdale added a run-scoring hit. Kyle Glanzmann pitched well in relief for CHS.
